Case 580c missing and smokes

Not sure the year but I have a 580c backhoe that was smoking white and missing eradically. We bought it running like that last spring thinking it needed some injection pump work or something. We've check compression andall cylinders over 400psi, valve adjustment seems good and no bent pushrods and no loss of antifreeze or compression in the radiator. We decided to have the injection pump and injectors tested. They turned out to be bad so we had the pump rebuilt and new injectors. Installed them and still runs the same. I've double checked the pump timing, valve adjustment, and checked the return lines. I'm lost as to were to go from here. Any advice and ideas would be appreciated.

Seems like you covered all the bases. I hate to ask this, but did you get the lines hooked up
properly so you have the correct firing order? Any chance you have air leaking into the fuel
delivery system? Are you sure the pump is timed correctly to the timing gears

I agree with Jerry have a look at the injector pipes, the firing order is 1-3-4-2, when you fitted the pump was the drive shaft marks on the tang matched up, the shaft tang is not off set and will fit into the pump 180 degrees out, when the timing is correct the flywheel 8 degree BTDC mark should line up with the pointer, the valves on #1 cylinder fully closed (both tappets should have clearance) the pump marks should match, if they don't the pump shaft is 180 degrees out, you look as you covered everything, filters, fuel flow air cleaner etc 400 psi is good compression, is the diesel moisture free, if it has a glow plug in the manifold that fuel goes through check that it is not leaking fuel into the manifold, placid old engine the 207.

Thanks for the replies I double checked
the injector lines and yes they are in the
right order. The timing marks in the pump
are lined up when the engine is at 0 tdc.
The valve cover says 0tdc ive read that
some were 0 and some were 8 tdc. I did
advance the pump timing 4 degrees just to
see if it made a difference but no change.
And both valves on #1 are loose when the
flywheel pointer is at 0 tdc so I feel
like all the timing gears on the front of
the engine are right.

I don't care where the pump drive gear mark is, the PUMP mark and crank mark must align every other crank revolution as the pump turn 1/2 engine speed. Try 6 or 8 degrees BTDC and see if that helps any.

The 0 TDC fuel injection does not look right to me so much so that I searched and found the manual for that machine, in the spec for the engine it states 8 degrees before TDC and no mention of zero, looking further on in the manual I came to two pictures of the timing holes one showing 0 degrees and the other 8 before, it does not say why and I don't know why the difference, all it says is to see the decal on the rocker, I would put it to 8 before and see how it goes, with over sixty years in the repair business I cannot remember any other engine with that late of a setting but.

I'm going to try the 8 btdc tonight. I
guess just because the valve cover says 0
it doesn't mean the engine is the original
one for this machine or valve cover.
Thanks for the tips.

Ok I changed it to 8 degrees btdc and it
seems much better still a little smoky but
I think it just needs to run for a bit. I
double checked and the valve cover does
say 0tdc but like I said maybe it's not
the same engine that originally came in
this backhoe. Thanks for the help much
appreciated.

I would work it for a while to see what happens as there is probably some unburnt fuel about causing the smoke, if you got rid of the misfire you are going in the right direction, at the least it is a bit encouraging and you can advance it another little bit to get rid of any remaining smoke if working it didn't.
Good luck
