i have a 580SE case backhoe. there is evidently a early version and a late version when it comes to buying used parts. can someone tell me how to tell the difference? thanks

The only two 580 E's I came across were the E and the SE, as far as I know there was only one model of each, both of them had the Cummins 4-390 engine, Borg Warner shuttle coupled to a Case 4 speed transaxle, there was some differ in the backhoes hydraulics, like valve chest and controls, I can't remember in detail what they were but the engine and power train is the same, they was turbo and none turbo versions of both.

The first 580 Super E's came out in 1983 with the CDC (Case Cummins) engine , naturally aspirated. 63 HP. The early ones
used single boom pivot pin and bushing arrangement like the 580 D and 580 SD. Later on they split the arrangement with two
separate pins which allowed a better hose routing. I believe this began with serial no. arrangement beginning with 1702.
The early units also had dry brakes in the outboard brake housings and the 4 speed transaxle used gear oil/hypoid gear
oil. Later ones had a modified brake housing which allowed the transaxle oil to splash into a trough cast into housing thus
creating Wet Brakes. If you have this later one do not use Gear Oil, Case had a spec Oil that would not glaze the disc
brakes over, This was a much needed feature which allowed the 580 Super E to be competitive with competitive makes
especially on municipal or gov't bid specs. Wet is Wet.The requesting party usually (never) asked how the wet disc brakes
were applied, so it helped a bunch with sales. There were no plain E's. All of this letter series were Super E's. In two
wheel drive form these units had the highest horsepower to weight ratio in the 14 ft backhoe class. A very nimble and
productive machine that they built for about four years. Another bit, when facing forward in the seat going forward, LEFT is
Left. When you turn the seat around to operate hoe your LEFT turns with you (Ex. the stabilizer cylinder behind the right
rear tire is The Left Stabilizer Cylinder in Case parts book terminology) this should help on parts ordering on the
backhoe.Hope this helps you out. Another bit, if using the machine for front end loader work handling light material that
can spill over bucket and clog radiator screen, you can use a fixed pusher blade fan from a 450-C dozer and run the side
covers.

I have a correction to make. Going by memory, the 580 SE had the single boom pivot pin. (?) It was the early 580 K's that began with single pin and switched over to a pair of pins.
