My New Holland 865 diesel skid steer smokes badly and uses a lot of oil dealer found a lot of oil residual in the intake pipe between the turbo and intake manifold they change out the turbo install a rebuild one help but still smoke 3 year later it’s really using a lot of oil and smoking a lot pulled the turbo off intake has oil in it and turbo has play on the shaft. Could I have got a bad rebuilt turbo or should I open the engine up. This machine has a lot of power and starts good any suggestions would help. Thanks. Mike

I had a Cummins VT903 engine upon which it took two tries to get the turbo repaired to where it didn't push oil back into the intake of the engine.

Does your engine have a crankcase breather open to the atmosphere, or does it go back into the engine somewhere? Either way, I would be making sure the crankcase is not building pressure. I doubt your problem is deep in the engine.

I agree with checking your crankcase vent. One other thing crossed my mind though. Several years ago I recall a 186 ih hydro that had the same problem as yours. If I remember correctly, one of the rocker arms was either broken or push rod was out of place or something. On intake stroke, the intake valve wasn't opening correctly so the vacuum was drawing oil up pass the rings. So it might be worth pulling the valve cover to have a look?

hanks guys for your input breather pipe not plugged wondering if my valve guilds could be worn. Have engine out do you think I should pull the head Appreciate your help. Thanks. Mike

You should have dug a bit further while the engine was in and running, now that it is out and by the symptoms you explain I would be looking at the piston rings,if the oil control rings are worn or broken it would account for the smoke and oil consumption and the oil in the manifold, the valves are not 100% air tight so it is possible for them to leak a little oil should too much be passing the piston,I cannot make a comment on the turbo if it was leaking oil on the intake side the oil would be sucked back into the cylinders and cause smoke and consumption as well, look at the return oil line from the turbo and make sure it is not blocked or damaged esp the right angle fitting at the bottom,my two cents worth.

hank will check that oil line so you’re saying I might have worn rings could I have worn rings and still have a lot of power. Also I have another problem with that machine bearing gone on right side hydraulic motor can that bearing be changed through that big inspection plate or will that motor have to come out how do you get the chain off if the connecting link is not in the right place will I be able to spin those wheels if I jack them free maybe I in over my head. Thanks might not be able to respond for a week need a break from this headache going on a holiday. Mike
