'74 Case 450 dozer

I have been working on my neighbors dozer. I pulled, and rebuilt the 201 gas engine. It has nothing to tell me what is what with the drive, there are no decals/stickers. At one time he had it painted orange. I learned what I could, as I did drove it from his house through his field, to my house, 1/4 mile max, about 4 months ago. He does not know how to drive it, his son drives it for him, when ever he goes over there.

Is forward on the levers high, or low. I know the lever next to the drive? levers is forward, & reverse. What is the lever that goes through the floor.

I just got it running, and I can't get it to move yet. So I need to know, what lever does what.

I have the blade raising & lowering, & side to side working. I believe the pump on the front of the crank, powers that.

The drive pump (charge pump) is the one on the front side of the engine. Then to the filter under the seat area, then to the controls, then to the torque converter and so forth. How do I bleed that system?

Thanks, Pat

the two leavers on the tower are forward high back low. could never figure out why case had the leaver on the floor in the way because you run the trans in low most of the time and with big feet the leaver is kind of in the way

Marloweg,
Thank you, that helps me.

Can someone help me with, bleeding the drive hydraulic system?

Do I just crack lines open while it's running, till I get no air coming out?

Where is the best place to bleed it?

Thanks, Pat

Has the pump lost its prime? That happened to my 450 once when ice melted under the tractor and it ended up sitting "nose high" for a week. To prime the pump, disconnect the rubber suction line just behind the pump on the right side of the engine, fill it with fluid and re-connect. Since the hose is almost level, that's easier said than done. What I ended up doing was cutting that hose and installing a tee to pour the fluid in. Make sure the open side of the tee is plugged closed after adding the fluid. Worked for me over 20 years ago. No problem since.

very common for the steel line that is the the supply side to rust a hole in it and it can get a hole in it from a stone in the wrong place. had to replace that line on all 3 of mine with HYD. hose. but first do like the other poster said about priming it and if it is full of oil if not fill and use Case TCH only others will say use any thing well i used high tran. on a rebuild and the trans lasted 20 hrs.

I'm not sure it does have any oil in it. I removed the engine, then removed the torque converter. Oil ran out, stored it in my garage, where more oil drained out while sitting for 4 ? months. The lines lost all the oil when I disconnected them. I also cleaned the oil filter that bolts to the firewall.

I have put back in three gallons of hydraulic oil. I used the oil he gave me to use, I believe it's heavy duty 303. He uses it in all of his hydraulic stuff. I know nothing about the oil, other then I was told Not to use it in my '63 Ford 4000 "SOS".

I am going to remove the side panel, and clean out the filter by the oil tank, tomorrow. I just found it in the "Case parts catalog" book he just gave me to look at. It's the only book he has on it.

It has two pressure gauges. A high pressure, and a lower pressure one. The high hardly moves. The low pressure gauge was up to about 80 psi. When I move the levers around, it would move back, and forth between 20 & 60. But mostly at about 40. But the high pressure doesn't change.

Thanks, Pat

Ahh, I did not know of a fill port. I filled it through where the dip stick is, on the right rear corner. I will go out, and look for the "fill port" you talk about.

The only info that I have been going on, is these two pages from the parts book.

Thanks, Pat

I found the fill port under the seat. It didn't touch the end of the dip stick. I put in a gallon into it, and then worked the gears. It wanted to move, actually it did move. I turned it off, and checked it again. I added another gallon to it, and it works good. I need to add another quart or so to it. But I have to run to his place a get it from him.

It runs great, runs cool, hit the starter, and it is instantly running. Now it's up to them to use it, and maintain it. Then next spring, I'm getting it back to dig me another pond, in the backyard.

My other neighbor is back home, and is going to take his crane home. I don't know what I'm going to do with all the room again. lol

I ordered a new temp gauge, fuel pump (been running it on gravity feed from the tank right now), have to drain the radiator, and put antifreeze/coolant into it, new rad petcock. And then I will return it to his house. Whew, done!

Thanks for all the help, I couldn't have got done without everyone's help

Pat

Did you fill the transmission and axle thru the fill port under the seat or did you fill the hyd tank on the right side of the seat?

I'd like to ask.
Do you check it while it's running, or with the engine off.

Thanks, Pat
