1976 International 500E Transmission Question

I Have a Friend Who has a 76 500E and for some reason the linkage is reversed for Forward Gear & Reverse (so if its in forward it goes backwards & if its in backwards it goes forward) very strange he wants to know what could cause this issue and if there is a fix?
Any help would be great so I can pass it along

Was it always this way or did it come about?,I would be looking at the linkage to see if any bell crank it may have has not turned the wrong way,I only ever come across that problem once on another make of machine and the reason was that the bevel gear had been installed the wrong side of the pinion,the guy that done it was not familiar with that make of machine when he took on the job of putting the machine back together after someone else took it apart.he applied logic putting it together as if you pushed the reverser lever forward it would go forward but alas that was the opposite to what it should be the lever had to be pulled back to go forward like on the manual Cats with a reverser,it was left that way and worked for many years after till it got traded in.
