im trying to help my friend, what we want is he has a really nice 3514 ih tractor loader and backhoe it came as that unit, backhoe is permanently attached, not a 3 point, after years of having it the mission is changing, and he wants us to remove the backhoe and set the tractor up as a grading tractor, with a serious size box blade with rippers ect, i cant find anything on what is involved in removing the backhoe unit from the tractor chassis, has anybody done one? other than blocking it up securely, and plugging all the hydraulic lines what else are we going to find??

He would be money and time ahead to just sell the unit and buy a tractor already set up. You are going to need a lot of hydraulic stuff like the lift top controls lift arms and more. If he goes on and takes this approach better to look for a complete junk ih tractor like he has to get all the parts. Can not think right of the top of my head what red tractor it is but there are about three that will work some one will answer surely.

3514’s were based on the 504 Ag tractor to a point, there were 3 different trans options as I recall, gear drive with a gear reverser, torque converter drive and hydrostatic. We had two of them at one time good machines in their day, had trouble with the splines in the swing system, but other than that I don’t recall too many other problems.

I don’t know your friends financial status, but if he can swing it would be easier/cheaper in the long run to find another machine to do the job he wants to do. Depending on your location old machines like that are pretty cheap, I know where there is a Case 580 gas tractor loader with a heavy duty 3 point hitch pinned in where the backhoe goes. I valued it at no more than $1000 as is, running driving maybe $2500. If he’s serious about grading an older road grader would be the ticket or if less serious an old Huber road maintainer.

I can tell you the backhoe is pinned to the rear loader frame, it is removable but you can not simply plug the hydraulic lines, the hydraulic system is open center and blocking the flow would be a bad idea to say the least, you would have to connect them in the proper loop. You must also be aware that there are two hydraulic systems feeding the backhoe, the trans pump that provides power steering also provides oil for the swing by way of a diverter valve on the right side of the operator, the main pump handles the rest.
