Excavator questions?

I want to thank everyone for your help in buying our two dozers, we are building levies, so opted for a couple of low hour D5G-LGP's, one is laser equipped. Now, I need some advice on Excavators.

We are building a lot of canals and want to stick with Cat just because of parts in Cambodia. We will be digging in heavy, wet clay, no rocks. I have to decide on a Cat 325BL or a Cat 330BL. The 330BL has about a 10.5 liter engine and about 12 ton more weight, I'm sure it will dig a lot more as the 325 has a 6.6 Liter engine and about 65 fewer hp. But, I am sure it will consume less fuel and is a lot easier to move around. My question for you is that of cost per moving a cubic yard. Assume labor is a minimal factor, so it is basically a question of diesel per yard. Which do you feel would be a better choice? How about maintenance and durability, assuming both are in same condition to begin with?

Thanks in advance!

I have run both, the 330 is quite a machine and can move some dirt.

BUT

As soon as I saw WET it caught my eye.If you bury a 330 it would be tough for even two 5's to pull out.If it is very wet ground go with the 325.

I operated a 330 for a couple years and 330C for a few years. The 330D is what I hope your looking at getting, a big step up all around from earlier 330's. 325C or D with with a short stick will move a lot of dirt IMHO.

I would just look at condition. There is not a lot of difference between the 25 and 30. I think the bucket pins are even the same size. Unless you are setting heavy structures or pulling trench boxes you won?t notice much difference

I would also like to add yes the 325 would be move fuel efficient but as far as cost of operation a huge percentage of that is who is in the seat. A really good operator can do more with a smaller machine than any rookie could do with a massive machine. Dirt is a lot cheaper to move when you don?t have to move it twice
