New to crawlers...

I have a John Deere 350 crawler loader backhoe. This is sort of new to me. I have the manual but is there anything else I should know or be aware of? Thanks

There is a whole world of things you need to know about that antique. Start by searching this site. there is a wealth of info here. CASE also made a 350 so be careful to keep them separate. I had a 1969 JD 350 from 1972 until 2004.

Yup. Chances are it's got narrow street pads on it if it's a CLB. Don't try to go in wet or soft ground. They don't have a lot of ground clearance to start with and without crawler pads with tall grousers you can get stuck real deep, real fast and then discover no one int he area has anything big enough to pull you out. Been there, done that, got the tee shirt!

Does it have a direction-reverser? If so, check the four big bolts/nuts that attach it the trans. It is a trouble spot. 1 1/8'hex as I recall. Two bolts on the bottom and two nuts on studs on top.
If it has no reverser, then it is a rare machine. Look under the seat and check the steel side-frames where they bolt to the steering-clutch housings and look for cracks or missing/loose bolts.

Most 350s until the D series, I'd be want to make sure the "torsional isolator" on the flywheel is not falling apart (with reverser). Early 350s do not even have one though, like I am talking about.

Might want to look close at the cast-steel support beam that is sideways and bolts to the track-frames on both sides. 350 has a poor setup. Look for bad areas like cracks, bad welds, missing bolts, etc. Eary 350s seem to hold up better then later ones.

Just make sure you keep it greased up, check all oil levels, fix any oil leaks and don't ram/jam your front bucket as the rams tend to break if over used . keep tracks adjusted and use it like the manual says. Over using a dozer will usaully end up costing you.
