hd 4 electrical issues

Starter troubles on an allis hd 4. I'm terrible with electrical, I'll admit that right off the bat. anyway, I hook battery up and turn the key on, hear the click and hit the starter button. Starter tries to engage and then everything goes dead. Like no juice to the starter. Unhook battery and then hook it back up, it clicks and tries to engage, then dead again. I pulled the starter off and hooked up booster and jumped terminals with screwdriver and it spun easy. Does this sound like an ignition switch problem? Thanks

Sounds to me like you are loosing your battery connection somewhere , most likely at the battery terminal. When you remove it and it works but does not work on the crawler has to be a connections somewhere. .Test light is your friend. Put it on let it click then go to checking and see where you have current and where not. Again most likely battery cable end or at the battery or end of the ground strap lots of folks fail to check that connection.

It has gotten more common for the ground cable to run with the hot cable right to the starter, rather than just somewhere on the frame. That's something you could update.

What starter is on that engine? I think the combines I had with that engine used a standard Delco. The tractor I had with that engine had a little foreign gear drive starter. That really whizzed it over. Hopefully they didn't put a Lucas on there.

You have one of two problems. either your battery is bad or your battery connection is weak. If you hear it click and the starter tries momentarily then your starter is probably okay. If you have one of those ends people puts on there cables I would check that first as they are notorious from loosing connections. I have an h4 myself and every so often it happens to me and a good cleaning of cables and posts always clears it up. bad cell in your battery will also cause it which will reguire a new battery if it is bad.

Its a delco. grounded to the frame right by the battery. might try moving it closer. Thx.

I checked for tightness, but I will double check. Battery is definitely good, took it out of my diesel p/u. I'm beginning to think maybe the push button starter switch.

If battery has bad cell will it still test 12 volts? I know when you take a battery to parts store they put it on a load test. If it has a bad cell, will it still test at 12+ volts with multimeter? terminals are all clean, some are crimped on so I will double check those. Thinking it might be the push button starter switch??

I just wanted to throw out there that I'm grateful for all the assistance. I forgot my password last night and couldn't get logged in to reply. Apparently, i'm just as good at remembering passwords as I am at finding electrical problems, lol.
Thanks guys, going to try all your ideas.

You need to spend a little money and buy yourself a multimeter so you check your circuit! My e-mail is open just send me a reply.

yes it still may show 12 volts. you have to use a hydrometer to check each cell if you can but some batteries you cant do that so you will need to have some one that has a load tester to test it. problem is that cell goes bad so you lose that extra juice that is needed to start your starter. I have had some luck by putting a booster on the battery and have been able to start my dozer that way. just depends how bad the battery is. some times these problems can be tough to find.

I haven't had chance to check any thing since last post. But one thing that intrigues me and makes me think it's not battery is if I connect battery and hit starter button it just barely engages starter then it won't click or anything. Like there's no juice. Disconnect either battery cable and instantly reconnect and it will try to engage starter again, then no juice again. Did that several times. Same result. Jump starter no help. Same result. Don't understand why disconnecting and reconnecting makes it try again. Starter just begins to engage each time battery is reconnected.

I feel obliged and embarrassed to tell what the problem was. After all the circuit checking and wire chasing it turned out to be a bad + battery cable! Spins like a champ. Now on to fuel problems. argh.
