im put the engine back in, the starter won't fit, checked online to see what its supposed to look like, ya, looks like I have the right one, worked before, looks like it needs to be ground some on the nose? misses going in all the way by around an 1/8''. anyone familiar with this? can see a rub spot on the nose, saw a place in the housing where I was hitting, far as I got, kinda cold out. thanx. actualy the side closest to the engine is not going in all the way, which kind of makes sense from where its rubbing...

I think you can move the nose cone by undoing the Allen screws that go in from the front,it does not make sense what you are saying that it fitted before you took it off, what is the reason it will not fit now,did you have it repaired and the nose cone was put on wrong,is the bellhousing the same,I think the starter was a Delco 35MT back in the day.

im sure its not the correct starter now, the end of the nose is different, it was pretty close to fitting so I guess p/o did't know , or didn't care. this nose has something on the end that looks like a lot like a frost plug, next too the bearig on the end of the drive, only turned like its going in,, I ground a little off the end, and it fit, but I guess I figured with the luck I been having, I better take more, when I did, I could see I ground too much, I could see where that freeze plug looking thing is held in... im slightly worried it could come out. at this point I need to just keep going, could probly throw some weld at it,, idk. may never have a problem,, curious though what it may be on the end, grease galley? doesn't look like anything mechanical. starter works, thanx

That small cylinder shaped housing you see has a wick inside, when the starter would be serviced the engineer would soak that wick in oil before fitting it,it's purpose was to lubricate the bush in the nose cone,if I were you and it's in the way I would remove the plug and wick, grind off what's in the way,put some oil in the hole, soak the wick in oil put it back, cut it if you have to to get the plug in,blur over the hole to hold the plug and that should do it.
Good luck
Ps that is not a 35MT starter
