I purchased an old Johnson 80B scraper and have been using it quite a bit over the past couple of years. For its age, it is in pretty good condition. My only problem is that I have twice thrown off the elevating chain. The second time did some damage to the coupler between the gearbox and the top drive shaft. I am in the process of machining new components for this, but really don't want to keep throwing off the chain, as it will likely take out more drive components. The chain is in reasonable shape, the rear drive sprockets are good, and the front idlers seem to be fairly good. I do see that the chain has quite a bit of slack, and I don't have a good idea as to how tight this should be. Both times that I have thrown the chain I was taking a bit too healthy bite in tough clay with 170 hp tractor, but never sheared the shear bolts on the drive line. I see that there are shims that can be added or subtracted to adjust the down stop for the front edge of the chain assembly. Should I adjust this higher? I don't suppose there is any site that would offer vintage manuals for this old scraper?
