Help with value of Case 580B parts machine value.

I haven't been on this board in a long time. It was a great resource when I was fixing a Case 530 backhoe a few years ago.

I have a Case 580B that was left behind after my dad died and I'm trying to get a realistic value on it to sell.

It's been sitting for about 10 years so it would need all new hoses, seal, fluids, etc.
The 188 diesel ran when parked and the engine turns by hand.
Hydraulics were strong but the clutch was starting to go out (reason why it was parked)

It's pretty rough but has all parts and no severe rust but some weld repairs.

I'd like to sell it to fund other projects.

The best offer I've had is less than $1000.
Is it really worth that little? I would have thought $2000-$1800 just as a parts source but no one local is biting at that price.
I can put it on Craigslist or somewhere but I don't want to waste everyone's time if all I keep getting is $500 offers.

It's located close to Cincinnati if that matters.

Thanks for any help in deciding a value.

Don't give up too quick... you're always going to get guys with ridiculous offers and don't base your opinion on them. It may not take too much to have it started and running and
that will make a good difference on price. If you were to part it out you will take better money in return but it takes time and effort. I don't know prices in your local market but a
good running 188 diesel would not be cheap to buy used in my area, wheels, tires, hyd. cylinders, buckets etc add up as used parts... there would still be lots of lbs. to sell as
scrap metal.

Here's the trouble with non running
machines, as a buyer it's a big risk,
who knows if the engine is actually
good, maybe by now water got in the fuel
system, maybe hydraulics were weak,
transmission made noise etc. Yes all the
parts have value, but not to one person,
they likely need just a single large
component to be buying a parts machine
for more than a 5 to 800 bucks, and
without it running there's no guarantee
the parts they need are good. So your
left with a machine that you need to
find a buyer who wants it just to have
one hand in case he needs parts here a
there, and that buyer won't want to
spend more than a grand likely. Now you
could part it yourself, but that's a lot
of time and hassle and many parts will
take years to sell. You could sell to a
salvage yard but doubt they would pay
more than a grand either. Best chance of
getting more than that would be to get
it running.

The 188 dsl engine alone is worth far more than a grand,, I just found a rear wheel for mine that are VERY hard to find and no new ones unless you have them custom made and gave 250 for the rim alone,, do Not give it away check around and see if you have a salvage place close if nothing else those machines are still being used a lot and parts are good movers,
cnt

I would try very hard to get it running. if it runs and operates at all you should be able to get 2500 for it. Who knows maybe it will run pretty good and the hydraulics may work well which would add to the value. If you cant get it running I don't think you will get any more than that. Case is known for hi price parts. DIESEL motor that wont run will scare a lot of people off. hydraulics that cant be operated at all is scary. Just to many unknowns on a non running machine. just my 3 cents worth.

Thanks for the feedback and advice.
I will be patient.
I want to get it running but will need to add that to the list of stuff to do.
If not I may piece it out but that's a lot of time to invest at this point.
Thanks.

So yes, certain parts may be worth a bunch, but if and only if you find someone who wants them. Looking at asking prices on ebay, craigslist, etc only tells part of the story - that's asking price but doesn't mean anyone actually is willing to pay that. If it's a fairly uncommon machine parts may be rare and expensive, but conversely there's not very many people looking for them either. Also, most folks looking for parts are only looking for a couple specific things, so the rest of the tractor is not worth much, or may even be a something that makes it worth less to them

Did you post it with a price? Try putting it on cl for $2500 or whatever - doesn't cost anything but a bit of time. Just be very up front about how firm (or not) you are on the price to hopefully keep folks from wasting time.

$1000 seems to be not unreasonable for a tractor that may or may not even run. Remember that to a potential buyer that means there's no way to test the trans, axle, brakes, hydraulics, etc etc, which generally means the price needs to be low enough that it's no great loss if it turns out the seller failed to mention something like a bad trans or similar.

Question to ask is what you're wanting to do with it. If it runs, even poorly, it's probably going to worth a fair bit more, ($5,000 wouldn't be unreasonable for a mostly functional backhoe IMHO even if it has a small miss, leaks, hard to start, etc) however, it may take a fair bit of time and money to get there. Probably worth putting some effort into getting it running if you have spare time/cash to invest.

On the flip side, if you just want to get it gone, put it up for $1500-2k and see what you get.

This is also the worst time of year to sell stuff. If you can, wait till the spring and you might get somewhat better results. Most people are short of cash due to the holidays and then taxes, and bad weather doesn't help folks wanting to go buy equipment. Come march/april folks are paying off holiday bills, getting tax returns and looking to spring/summer so more likely to be able to buy stuff and to be looking for it.
