Need a little help.

I've got a Dresser 412B that I bought to use around my small farm and it has developed a problem. A hydraulic hose was leaking so I parked it until I had time to work on it and it sat for about 2 months before I had time to look at it. It wouldn't start so I replaced the batteries (tested bad) and even took the starter off to have it checked but it was good. I'm wondering if I have a head gasket leaking water on top of a piston causing a hydro lock? Can I remove the injectors to check for this? I've never had to make a repair like this so I'm in unfamiliar territory. Any input/advice is welcome.

Thanks,

Scott

If the coolant has leaked in the radiator will be low and some will have got into the oil, check the oil level,it is unlikely for the head gasket to fail while the machine is parked, what are the symptoms that make you think that's the problem, secure the machine and make sure its out of gear and cross the starter motor, cross the light wire with the heavy battery cable and see if the engine turns over as there are things like the neutral start switch that could be having an issue.

Radiator appears low but no water apparent in the oil. If water seeped into the crank case it should be on the bottom so I'll drain the oil if necessary. Starter engages but engine will not turn over. It acts like it is locked up. I have heard of a liner cracking or pitting allowing water to seep into the cylinder. Possibility? It was running great when the hose went so I'm looking for suggestions on where to look next.

Thanks for the reply,

Two months is a short time for the engine to lock up,this is a self loading scraper or am I mistaken?,are you sure everything is disengaged and there is no load attached to the engine, like TomA suggested try turning the fan,was the exhaust covered while it stood,it is possible for rain water to have got in on top of the pistons and cause a hydraulic lock, removing the injectors would let the water be blown out when the engine is turned over.

Cannot turn engine with the fan (tried that). I will try with a wrench next attempt. The exhaust has never been an issue in the 2+ years I've had it. I ordered a repair manual for the engine and it should be here by the end of the week. I'll be back to report what I find.

Thank you for taking time to reply.

If you cannot turn by hand then its more than likely the starter was not able to turn it either,it could be coolant leaked in or rain water from the exhaust or there is some mechanical load on it,the rainwater can get into the cylinders by the exhaust valve, there will always be one open, could be a rodent nest too, take the injectors out and see what you find.
