I have a 1963 towmotor with a 4cyl flat head motor.. it starts
idles and revs up no problem.. but when I put it in gear it
stalls.. won't hardly move at all.. any ideas? Thanks!

Start with the basics.

Is it firing on all cylinders

Is firing order correct

Do a compression test

Sufficient fuel and air flow

Park or service brake dragging

...

A weak spark may fire a cylinder at idle but under load it may not. Check that the spark can jump a minimum of 1/4 gap.

This doesn't address your problem, but-. Those old Continentals could be set so many ways. Some had a magneto down on the side. My forklift Continental has a distributor mounted right on the head. I removed it once to install points and condenser. I was shocked to find I couldn't turn it by hand. Now I can't remember if it was the dist. bushing itself, or a drive shaft below it. Either way, with it removed I was able to lube it and keep working it until it freed up. If yours is set up that way, it wouldn't hurt to check it, and also check your centrifugal advance, and timing.
