JD 1010 gas crawler / loader

Finally received drive pressure plates for my JD crawler, book calls for 8 frictions disk and 8 steel drive plates..hhhhhmmmm Fingers bottomed out on pp, manual also says some crawlers have 8 frictions and 7 steel drive plates, so I removed one steel drive plate, then measured with the gauge. All fingers measured correctly,so I torqued PP bolts to 18 lbs. So now I have 2 extra steel drive plates, oh well, I'll give them to a close friend as he has a JD 420, which uses same steel plates.
Getting ready to put finals back on. Oh the fun starts!!!

Everyone have a great day

Pressure plate fingers are adjustable with a special gauge. You should be able to check how many plates are needed by the serial number. If you don't have the serial number you can find the range by looking at other changes made on the machine, like the type of glow plug ect.. You might want to double check before putting it together it is no fun taking them apart again when they don't work right, BTDT.

The pressure plates are also different along with amount of steels and fibers. Goes by the serial #.

When you get a final on only put a couple of bolts on then put a long bar on the pins that aline the sprocket make sure you can?t make it slip then have somebody pull the lever back to release the clutches but not far enough to engage brake and make sure it releases

if I put it together how someone else put it together it would be totally incorrect. Whom ever repaired this crawler must not have had neither a Service or parts manual. Did damage and had disk in wrong, plus damage right hand pressure plate beyond repair. and Left PP you could push fingers down with your thumb. They had 7 steel drive plates on left side and 9 friction plates, 2 on outside against PP. I'm assuming it was because the friction plates were wore too much.
They also bend both sleeves that throwout bearing carrier rides on. Since I could not find any sleeves, found a 3/4 drive socket tha t just fit inside, work on them with body hammer, finally got them repaired so the throw out bearing carrier slides freely on them.

I put in the amount of both steel drive plates and friction according to parts manual, and checked adjustment of PP fingers with the Special gauge, that I purchased from Lavoy. So far I will have put in new brake linings, steel drive plate, frictions, PP, and throwout bearings on both sides. Also had to remove 3 broken bolts from housing on right side final, which had been broken a long time.still waiting on parts for left side.

Occasionally you will encounter a drum that has "use only 7 discs" or something like that in the bottom of the brake drum, its been years since I saw one. When a drum got replaced in later years and the disc count differed from the parts book, this was to identify a late drum. If you look at a parts book, crawlers after 31,000 used 7 instead of 8, but the part number in the book is the same for both drums. That is because it is a "sub" number and a later or updated part has been substituted for the original part. The way to inform a mechanic or owner that a later part has been installed was the "use only 7 discs" molded into the bottom of the drum. 1010 is the only crawler I have ever encountered this on, not sure about the later dry clutch crawlers.
