Weld new track adjuster tube to yoke

I am rebuilding a track adjuster on an International 175C track loader. The piston and also the steel cylinder tube are both pitted pretty badly. I have ordered a new piston and a replacement weld on cylinder tube. I am assuming that I need to weld the new tube to the yoke with a high nickel rod since the yoke is cast iron. I would appreciate any advice on doing this replacement. Would it be wise to preheat the yoke? I will try to true everything up before welding. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I kind of doubt it is cast iron in such a high shock area. 7018 will lay right down on it if it is cast steel. Preheating is necessary when there is confined expansion (welding a spoke of a flywheel). Anything that is free to expand in all directions it safe to weld cold. If you're still worried about it, build a charcoal fire and bury the forked end in it, let the fire burn out and cool off. Then it will be stress-relieved.

Very unlikely it's cast iron if it was designed to be welded, most likely cast or forged steel, should weld just fine with 7018 and moderate preheat.

Thanks for the replies. I think it is true that the yoke would have to be cast or forged steel due to the shock impacts that it is subject to. I will weld with 7018 as suggested.

You can bet your bottom dollar that the yoke is not cast iron, cast steel yes,the rod the others mentioned will do just fine, how does the cylinder come open both ends or only one?.

I have fixed many of them and 7018 works fine. It is not a hard job , just be sure you put the seals on the piston facing the right direction.

AJ,

One end of the cylinder is welded to the yoke and connects to the
grease fitting, the open end has a rod which is a close sliding fit in
the tube and pushes back against the big coil spring which moves the
idler out and tensions the track.
