steering clutch drain plug location on john Deere 455E track loader I have drained the oil from the transmission and now the manual tells me to drain 3.5 gallons from each steering clutch. It says under the rear of the machine. I see nothing under the rear of the machine that looks anything like the picture. I see a drain plug at the very bottom of the final drive and a plug half way up the final drive front and back. A larger plug is at the very top of the final drive which I figure is where I pour the oil in until it comes out the holes half way up the final drive when changing the final drive oil. I see an even larger plug over top of the final drive and of set(3/4 inch socket set extension to remove it) I assume it is the fill for the steering clutch, but can not locate a drain plug.

Thanks for any help

No, the manual did not say anything about taking it off. I thought about that, but also thought that the belly pan was to far forward. So I guess you are saying I need to take the belly pan off? I started this project because I almost lost revers and the mechanic told me with a little luck maybe changing the filter and fluid might up my pressure enough to get reverse working a little longer. He thought it might work since we did not find any large pieces in the filter. However, when I checked the screen I found plenty of peices so I am thinking maybe I should just forget about changing the steering clutches and fill her back up. If reverse does work a little better I will finish pushing a brush pile together before taking her in to be rebuilt. If not I guess it is straight on the trailer. The mechanic told me he can not tell me how much it will cost to rebuild because it depends what the transmission guy finds when he opens it up, but that the last one was around $5000. I am of course sad to spend thousands of dollars, but figure the machine is worth more than 5000. I also have the back hoe attachment with it. I have had it maybe 5 years. I just use it on the farm. I just had the injector pump rebuilt and it starts and runs well and don't have any leaks that I have noticed. I guess I should ask the mechanic what he thinks of the machine prior to having it rebuilt. Does anyone have any thoughts on the situation?

if you do have to take the belly pan off, be careful. It is under a lot of pressure from the metal tension of having run over a lot of stuff & the pan is pushed up so when unbolted it will spring downward. Also has the weight of rocks/mud on top of the pan. On my jd350 I think the drain plug was at the bottom of the housing in the side. I don't think I had to take the pan off to drain the steering clutches. It was a dry clutch & we kept the plug out because oil drained past the seals & soaked the dry clutches (ruining them).
