John Deere 410C Fuel problems

I'm not sure what to check next. It might be an air problem? Here's what I know.

1. It's been running fine but lost power and died all of a sudden.
2. Changed the fuel filter, pumped the filter full via the transfer pump lever before starting.
3. Ran fine at idle but quit after about 30 seconds. Does that continually but run time gets shorter after first time.
4. I can hear the blower winding down after it dies.
5. There is no control over RPMs via the throttle rod at the injector pump - it only idles.
6. I do get fuel out of the return line on top of the injector pump when I crack the nut. Loosening it up much more that a crack the engine won't run.
7. Cracking an injection line shows it's injecting OK. Cracking three lines prevents engine from running.
8. Injector has 12V any time ignition switch is on.

I would appreciate any help with troubleshooting/fixing.
Thanks!

Look on the side of the injection pump, if there's a two screw timing cover loosen it so fuel can leak out of the housing. If it starts and runs then with the leak there, and slowly dies again when the screws are tight that proves the injection pump needs repair. Recently repaired a JD 4320 pump for the same trouble.

Thanks for the reply. My gut feeling has been the injector pump all along.

I loosened the screws, had diesel leaking out, it started and ran for a while. I don't think I let it run the normal 30 seconds though because quite a bit of fuel was pouring out on the ground. Then it started raining so I came back in and reread your post.

One question before I get out to run the test again. You said "If it starts and runs", do you mean if it runs at all or if it runs past the normal 30 seconds?

Thanks again!

If engine runs and accelerates like normal with the side cover leak for two-three minutes, then acts up again with the screws tight that proves the pump needs repair. I've loaded otherwise dead tractors with a catch can under the leaking pump just so it would run long enough to get on the trailer. Just finished an Oliver pump today for the same problem.

I ran the test as suggested and the injection pump sure does appear to be the problem. Any suggestions on how to get this fixed? Sounds like you could do it but I'm in Montana near Bozeman.

Do yourself a favor when you fix the pump. Spend an extra $50 in parts and eliminate that plastic ring that fails, forever.
My Deere 300B failed in the middle of nowhere. I drove it a mile home with the fuel return unhooked and diesel fuel running
out onto the ground. I had it fixed in less then a day once in my shop. Solid metal weight-retainer ring that eliminates the
pellathane-plastic ring was $45. Seal kit was $20. New brass "pilot tube" bushing was $6. New housing-pressure-relief valve
was $7. So 7 hours downtime and a around $80 in parts and was all set.
