having trouble getting the timing gear cover off, seems you need to get a wrench inside it and get the center idler timing gear loose before the cover will come off. guess im trying to get the crank out, neighbor says its not necessary, but if I could get it out, seems better, the center gear is beat, want to clean it up best I can. It's a weld on gear. anyways, any help on how to get this off appreciated, pretty hard to work on, pump removal,, haven't got that off yet, I will get my Houdini tools out. thanx Steve

I have not removed a cover from a 336 for years, but I thought they came of like their 6 cly engine. The gear on the pump has to be removed and remove front crank seal. It requires a bit of wiggling but should slip out of there. If you remove the inj pump it does make the cover easier to handle and remove. Rod.

you may be right, I had that pump gear off once, I think the water pump has to come off to get enough free play to move the cover in a position to clear that center gear... think I may clean up the oil pump gear (the cruxt of my problem) with the crank in, and go from there,, thanx

The cover comes off easy if the injector pump is removed,as the drive gear for the pump and idler gear has helix cut gears they must turn as the gears are moved off each other.

I can try the pump removal, I had the gear off it, sure looks like the center gear is on by a nut inside the case, and the case goes behind the gear, think the water pump would help a lot, might give the crank enough clearance to come out. lots of work

You do not take the fuel pump idler gear off the cover to get the cover off,you remove the injector pump drive gear so the gears can turn as the cover is pulled out, there are about a dozen bolts holding the cover to the front of the block, when the cover is been put back the gear has to be on and torqued up properly before mounting the cover, the cover is on two dowels and can be hard to get off, make sure that all the bolts are out.
