Hi, New to the site! I bought a cat D6 from my neibor, old Montana logger, who's gone now.It has run great for me on my acerage in till the other weekend when I parked it on a (fairly) steep sidehill. After returning hours later I cannot get the transmission into gear, the gears can be felt (linkage is free as I've pulled all the cover plates and it looks good).Leaver feels sprung in the forward position. Transmission fluid was low and I've topped it off as well as made sure fluid in supply line. I can feel trans pump on block running. Anybody hear of loosing prime on these machines? Best way to prime and or test pump? Again I'm on a steeper grade facing uphill. .thanks for any info! Stuck on the mountain in Montana

Sounds like its lost prime,if the charge pressure is low gears can't be selected, find any breathers on the transmission and clean them, loosen the filler cap,the suction strainer on the pump feed could be blocked, for to move it try and fill the feed line and pump with oil and try it.

Thanks AJ, have had little luck finding any breather or filter on this transmission, I've read guys removing a steel filter? and cleaning it. I filled the pickup tube and the pump tried to pressure up, however unsucsessfull so far. I was nervous running the machiene/pump too long would possibly damage it?Would pressureizing the tank with air help or hurt? Thanks for the help thus far, I feel like I'm on the right path

The breathers been the cause was a long shot but they are a service item, once you removed the dip stick or filler any vacuum would have let go,is this a B series machine,I can't remember where the pump is located,I think there was a pressure test point on the elbow coming off the pump,if yours has it remove the plug and pump a couple of pints of oil in with a squirt can and try,do not try the air as you may end up with age old oil seals letting go,any way you can face the tractor the other way.you would want to make sure the strainer is not blocked before pulling the pump.

Thanks AJ! Got the old girl to prime up! Headed to the shop for cleaning/ inspection. Any ideas on a source for factory service manual? Thanks again for the information and help!

Ebay or the Cat dealer is your source for manuals. I don't suppose you have a D6C. From your description of the problem, your transmission fluid ran back into the bevel gear compartment when you left the nose up, way up, and the transmission broke suction. One fix is to run the transmission over full. I don't know what to tell you re the 6C. We run 8H-s and 8K-s five gallons over. I know of a dealer who modified 6C transmissions 30 years ago to eliminate that problem. They extended the transmission pickup with a hose into the bevel gear compartment. That eliminated catastrophic direction change (aka one wild a$$ ride backwards) when operating at a steep angle. There should be plenty of 60+ year old mechanics in MT who worked in the woods when they were young. If I were you, I'd start asking around and find one of them.
