JD 450B steering clutch and drive

Hello everyone,
I am in the process of rebuilding the steering clutches on my 450B and could use a little advice about why my tractor lost power on the right hand side. While pulling back on the left side steering clutch lever in forward or reverse my tractor loses all power on the right side and stops in its tracks completely. Pinion shaft looks great, bull gear is solid without missing teeth, and the drive shaft that runs through the clutch pack is in great shape. I have noticed some pitting on the steel plates in the steering clutch assembly but the fibers look to be in good condition. Is it possible that the clutch pack was sticking and not allowing power to be transmitted to the final drive?

All advise about this common issue with the 450B's will be greatly appreciated. Thank you all

Does handle have freeplay so pressure plate is exerting full force? Weak or out of adjustment pressure plate?

If the clutch discs were stuck to the steel plates, it would be just the opposite, you wouldn't be able get it to quit pulling. It would not release. A steering clutch is no more than a drive clutch. If the throw-out bearing is riding the fingers and has no free play, it will slip. Trade your B for a C or newer and solve your problems. Sorry for the negativity but I hate a John Deere B. I have worked on too many of them in the last 40 years.

My 350 was that way. If you fix the clutches, then the seals will leak & cover the clutches with oil, making them useless. If you remove the plugs in the bottom so the oil will drain before it ruins the clutches, you will forget that & drive in mud & water, it will ruin the clutches. Just a terrible idea & thats why Deere changed to the wet clutch system with the 350C &450Cs.

Stack the fibers and the steel plates together then measure how thick it is then look in the book and see how thick each one is suppose to be take that times the number of disks and your probably wore to thin

If you pull the left lever and the crawler stops, it is the RH clutch that is bad or out of adjustment. Oil contamination is another possible issue.
