Vermeer M-60 backhoe/trencher with Wisconsin engine

I bought at auction a Vermeer M-60 Pow-R-Backhoe/Trencher, this is the name on the machine itself, at auction. had to put In a new ignition switch. ran great until it died and will not restart. Turns over like it's going to start. It's not getting fire to plugs. I have changed fuel filter. no sediment bulb I can find. has a cleaned Cyclop's dry air cleaner by Donaldson's # FWA05 2526. machine was made by Vermeer Mfg. Co. in Pella, Ia. Believe it's a 4 cy. air cooled engine.
there is a tag on the front of the engine BUT it was painted over then scrapped really hard by someone before I bought it. I would like to know if anyone knows where other identification tags or numbers may be located on this engine!! or if maybe there was only one Wisconsin engine put in this machine, and if so which one was it! The nearest Vermeer Dealer to me is 100 miles away and the person I talked to didn't seem to be know any more about it then I do. Would appreciate all help I can get. year of mfg. model #'s. If I buy a coil, points, condenser do I have to get specific numbers or just for any 4 cly. engine. thanks in advance for any help you all can give me.

yes I would like a repair manual. even a operators manual would be ok. just wanted to know what to ask for before I order. also what is the name of the site? thanks. louise

Right distributor and no spark, check the connections on the new switch you fitted, if its got the old conventional setup of points and condenser, see the points are clean and are opening,it could have electronic ignition, see what it has and come back.

Google Vermeer or call them in Pella Iowa. For some reason this site will not let me post the
site.

distributor. the points look good. replaced the condenser. and replaced spark plug wires. checked wiring from new switch. all intact. turns over great but won't start!

Ok you got the old fashioned points ignition, you said in your first post you had no spark at the plugs, on the coil you will find two light wires and the HT lead that goes to the centre of the distributor cap, remove the lead from the centre of the cap, remove the cap, turn the engine till the points are open, connect a jump wire to the terminal of the wire that goes from the coil to the distributor, switch the ignition on,hold the HT lead half inch from a good clean ground with a insulated pliers, tip the end of the jump wire to a clean ground, watch the gap between the HT lead and ground, there should be a good sharp spark,if there is that says the coil and and switch is ok,note which plug lead the rotor is looking at and put the cap on and the HT lead back in the centre, take that plug lead off the plug and hold it to a clean ground and tip the jump wire to ground, see if there is a spark,if no check the centre bush in the cap and the cap and the rotor for cracks,if you have a spark the points would be suspect,do those few checks and see what you find.
