JD350 injector pump procedure

I need to pull the injector pump on my crawler. The manual says,"Bar the engine in direction of rotation until the timing line on the governor...registers with the timing line on the cam."

So, I am assuming the term "Bar" means to turn the engine but how do you turn it? On a car, I get a socket on the harmonic balancer nut to turn the engine, but the JD doesn't seem to have a good place to get a hold of anything. Also, it seems like it takes two people even if I could figure out how to turn the engine because you need to see the index mark to know when to stop.

Any tips would be appreciated. Thank you.

take the plate off the bellhousing & put a crowbar or large screwdriver in the hole & under the ring gear teeth & pry upward. Moves pretty easily, assuming its out of gear, of course. To find the plate go to the injection pump & go straight back along the engine til you hit the bellhousing.

That helped; thank you very much.

For the clarification of others: When the plate with the flywheel pin is removed, there are two openings to the flywheel exposed; one for the flywheel pin, one that allows access to the ring-gear. I used a short automotive brake adjusting tool to lever the flywheel around one tooth at a time. It takes lots of patience. I checked the Injector Pump every 10 teeth. I also marked the fan blade so I could see how many times it went around. The index line in the Injector Pump window finally came around but it was very difficult to see. It was perfectly horizontal but so light and thin, it was almost imperceptible. Had the flywheel pin not gone in in that position, I would have kept turning, looking for the "real" index line.

Everything else with the exception of the inside mounting nut came off easily. I was unable to get any wrench on that inside 9/16" nut. Tonight, I heated and bent a a 9/16" box wrench into a "J" shape and will try it tomorrow. I assume there is a "correct tool" to get on that inner nut. Maybe someone who has experienced this can chime in with their solution

The tool - used for starter motors and injection pumps.

Thank you guys for the pictures and comments. I will send a picture of my home-made version soon. I really had to file the end thin to get it around the nut as clearance between the nut and injector body is really tight, but I did get it to work. Now comes the fun part...tearing down the pump and installing new seals and gaskets. Wish me luck:).

file?? That's what grinders are made for.. lol.. shoulda taken less than 5 minutes.
The pump reseal is do-able if you have a manual or instructions.. they're on the web but a search is required or atleast a "lead" or link..
BUT you can save yourself ABUNCH of headache by sending it to someone who knows how to do it & wont rape you.
There are several folks on this site.

Dieseltech has done them for me. He's darned good on them and he won't break you in the process. He's on this and other forums most evenings & some days.
