TD-14A Gear Ratios

I'm looking at TD-14A serial number TDF34659. There are differences between that one & my -14A serial number TDF36246 manufactured in the same year. I'm told by my "main mechanic" that farm tractors were built with different gear ratios or rear end ratios, giving higher speeds/gear. Is there any way to find out if this is correct, other than putting the two tractors side by side, picking a gear & see what happens? He was guessing that the farm tractor might be geared too high for plowing snow, which is my main reason for having the tractor.

I would guess that ploughing snow would be one of the lighter jobs a tractor would have to do,a tractor that can do ag work is no weakling, look at the size of some of the equipment they use,you have no worries.

You will be fine. Grandpa farmed with his TD-14A from 1953
to 1964. When he wasn't plowing he had a dozer blade on it
and used it for dirt or snow work whenever the need arose
including one summer when he built a mile long road into our
farm with it. When he retired it from farming in 1964 he left
the blade on it and it hasn't been off since. Still have the
tractor today.

I'd like to reply to your "guess". Given that I have added 18" to the top of the blade in contour with it I have no problem sticking that tractor in snow when I'm trying to clear out a cut in my driveway that has blown full. Also, I've had to go to low gear and lift the blade off the ground a bit to keep moving up my steep driveway. If that tractor I'm looking at has a low gear with the ratio of, let's say second or third on my tractor I could get it into a situation where I would run out of power. This is not a guess---I've been plowing this driveway for over a dozen years.

Thanks for that story, but I'm still curious about the gear ratios. From my reply to AJ, I could get into trouble with a rather high low gear.

The above is in reply to "Greenenvy". The edit feature isn't working at this time.

Look in the parts book, I have a parts book that covers both serial numbers and it only shows one ring and pinion set so I would say you mechanic is blowing coal. Have a complete service book on those tractors and no mention of different pinion. I did not check the bull gear pinion in final drives but again I suspect no difference but will look.

Think you are right JM according to the oldest at my place he won't retire he says there was only the one model of the 14A that he can recall,my late father used the 14A's on scraper work and we had plenty drive train problems back in the day,it takes a bit of memory to remember the gear ratios going back sixty years or more, grand tractor it was nice to the eye but was in love with the wrench.
