Komatsu D20A-5 Main Clutch

The drive clutch on this dozer is working intermittent. Push the clutch in and it does not disengage, start it in gear, run for awhile, then, at some point, the clutch starts working perfectly. Once it starts working it will continue to work until shut down. Then, like the next day, I play the start in gear game all over. Removed and cleaned pressure relief valve yesterday, no change, still won't disengage, fluid level is OK. Has anyone experienced this and knows whats up? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Is the inertia brake adjusted correctly and stopping the output shaft from the clutch when the pedal is pressed, check it,the clutch oil has a strainer in the bottom left of the housing that needs cleaning from time to time,it needs to be clean so the pump can pick up the oil, check those couple of things and see how it goes.

Never the easy thing is it,I take it the clutch adjustment is to spec, there were two other things that I came across in other models that caused the clutch to remain driving when the pedal was pressed, one was the oil drain holes in the flywheel became blocked and the oil could not escape and would push on the friction disc and hold it against the pressure plate causing it to remain turning, the other was the friction disc been so worn that some material came off and got sandwiched between the plates and kept it in shaft turning,I don't think you got those problems as you say its ok after use, check the strainer,it may make no difference but it should be cleaned when the oil is changed, for a test look down at the output shaft from the clutch and see its stopping when you press the pedal if not tighten up the brake till it does stop it,when the brake is adjusted right it should stop the shaft turning but not the tractor moving.

OK, I cleaned the strainer, pretty nasty, but it didn't make a difference. Floor plate is off so I can clearly see driveshaft, it doesn't ever stop cause the clutch is engaged. I can hear the inertia brake trying to stop it, but no way. I'm guessing the pump for the clutch also works the steering slaves? they work fine. So I'm also guessing I'm gonna have to open it up and check the disk and the rest of the internals?

Do you know what the "spec" is for the adjustment? There is not much left as the clutch arm is almost out of travel, may an 1/8" left.

No I do not have a book, for a test tighten up the clutch adjustment and see if that will help,if not it looks like you will have to take it out, another probable cause is the pilot bearing could be binding,if you are happy that there is nothing wrong with the external linkage you will have to take it out, they are such good dozers its well worth doing anything it needs.

I don't have a manual but for a test I would tighten up the clutch adjustment as far as and do the same with the brake and see if the shaft stops then when the pedal is pressed,if that doesn't work looks like it will have to be removed it is possible that the pilot bearing is binding and dragging the output shaft with it,those are a great dozer and well worth repairing.

The inertia clutch is adjusted correctly, there is no way it can stop the shaft because the clutch is not disengaging. I cleaned the strainer. Remember I said "it was working OK", well now I can't get it to work. I tried warming it up and driving around, now the clutch is not working under any circumstance (this is after it sat over the winter).

If your steering is working ok the pump is working and as far as I remember the clutch is oil lubricated and is manually operated,I've not had one of those machines in the shop for a time but I think there was an inspection plate on top of the clutch housing, you probably have had it off if not remove it and with a strong light have a look at what is happing when the pedal is pressed, the yoke should push the trust bearing towards the flywheel, there are three fingers on the pressure plate that the trust bearing pushes against when the pedal is pressed to release the clutch,if that is happening then the trouble is inside, you will have to remove it,can you figure where all the debris came from that was in the strainer?.
