Cat 79 U 3204 question

Guys,
New to the forum here, been reading thru some posts and seems like there's some great folks on her along with some really good information Looking forward to getting to know you guys.
My question is regarding my old Cat 79 U D3 with a 3204 engine
Last year it threw a rod thru the block, I think the oil cooler clogged and it lost lubrication to the drivers side of the motor but haven't torn it down yet to be sure. The machine also needs new chains and various other undercarriage parts. Just before the motor blew we had just replaced the steering clutches, brakes and rebuilt the steering clutch valves.
What's the best route to finding a replacement motor?
A guy says he has one in Texas with low hours but its arrangement number is slightly different than mine.
The replacement has a number 4N0100
Mine has an arrangement number 4N0169
Is that a match?
Any thoughts or tips for engine replacement on these machines would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Typically the easiest way to change an engine in one of the older CAT dozers is to pull the hard nose and shuck everything up, and out the front. As simple as these old things are, it's pretty straightforward.

As far as an engine, you can try Yellow Engines. I haven't done any business with them, but from what I have heard they have a pretty good reputation.

As far as the arrangement number, don't let that scare you. Typically that's nothing but the arrangement of external parts on the engine. That being the case, it's usually just a matter of swapping parts to get the reman to match what you originally had.

Good luck, feel free to post again if you run into any issues.

So that's pretty encouraging, thank you for the insight
the guy with the engine says it came out of a 79U dozer. I'd hate to outlay that kinda money and it not fit
Thinking it would be a good idea to pull the cylinder head and oil pan to do an inspection before I go installing it in the machine, do you guys see any issues with doing that?

Pulling the head isn't going to really tell you much, unless you saw a sizable ridge. Before I did anything I'd check compression and see what your looking at there. I haven't seen any specs for the 3204, but typically anything over 400 psi would be pretty good for a diesel.

If you've got good compression that's a good sign that the top end is in pretty good shape.

From there, pull the pan and check the bearings. If they're good, button her up and go with it. If they are through to the copper, I'd go ahead and change them out while your there.

Given the opportunity to check one out, this would be my preferred method as it would tell me far more than pulling the head, and pan together.
