Case TerraTrac 600 Dozer Continental Engine Pull Help Needed

Hello All,

Like the title says I have a Case TerraTrac 600 Dozer with a Continental 4 cylinder diesel motor.

Ring gear on flywheel came off so trying to pull motor to repair. Not having any luck getting motor pulled. We are unbolted, tourque converter and all the bolts to flywheel casing. Pulled hydraulic pump and motor mount on the front.

The issue is the top of the motor will not pull away from flywheel housing on the top. Appears there are two pins in the top that will not come apart. I have a small gap in the bottom 1/2 between motor and flywheel housing. I have tried prying as hard as I dare without breaking something. Have even tried pulling the motor forward with a come along wrapped around motor and then to the blade. Once again as much pressure as I felt comfortable.

I have supported the flywheel housing with a jack.

Any help would be appreciated, using a torch to heat anything is not an option. Too much oil and since I am broke down on the side of a mountain there is no way to get it powerwashed to use a torch.

Thanks for any help or advise you can offer.

I if my memory is correct the flywheel housing has bolts coming from the inside to the block, the way I think I removed the last one I done was to disconnect the propshaft and take the torque out with the engine, then remove the torque housing, torque and then the flywheel, there was no need to remove the flywheel housing, seeing the age of yours I would replace the rear oil seal while you have access to it.

Thanks for the reply
I don't see any bolts on the inside top of flywheel housing. I loaded a picture. Am I missing something?

The heads are probably broken off and thats the two "pins" you seen, the something you are missing is that the flywheel is bigger than the hole in the housing.if I had the problem I would try and get the ring back on and if I could I would secure it with several inch long runes of weld, done it with a truck that had a crane over the gearbox and never heard of it again.

I have a parts catalog for a"520" Terratrac diesel. The schematics show for mine a 3/8-16NCx1-5/8 stud at 12 o"clock between the flywheel housing and the engine block. However on mine you would have no need to remove the engine to make the repair I understand your making. You would remove the flywheel from the end of the crankshaft; is attached with 4 studs 7/16-20NFx2-1/4. Too remove the engine; the flywheel housing comes out with the engine.

AJ is right ,the flywheel will not come through the flywheel
housing .To get to flywheel you must remove converter by
unbolting the converter housing from the flywheel housing and
removing the bolts that hold the converter to the flywheel.
then remove the flywheel. If the engine is like most cont'l
engines , there are at least 2 bolts behind the flywheel
holding the housing to the engine block.
AJ is also right on welding it in the tractor ,I did it in
a 1000 case loader . Work the ring back on thru the timing
window and the starter mounting hole, when welding put the
ground on thru the timing window ( make sure it is on the
flywheel and not the housing so as not to ruin the bearings)
and weld thru the starter hole.
I have a service manual for a 600 diesel, I put it on a disk.

Send me an email with a phone # and I'll call you .Service
manual is 53 mb , can you email handle that ,or maybe I can
put it on my web site .

Thanks to everyone for the help.

George i would really like that manual you can call me at (406) 208---9596. I would really appreciate it. You can email me any curtis098 at iCloud.com. I am going to delete these after you get the info.

Wanted to update so anyone in the future needs help. There where two studs with nuts and one bolt from the flywheel housing to the motor. Just like everyone said. Thanks much to George for the repair manual and advice. I do have a parts manual so thanks for the offer. I ended up pulling the motor flywheel housing in one piece. It could be done from the back without pulling the motor but it is much easier pulling whole assembly. Flywheel has to weigh 90 lbs can't imagine trying to manhandle that over your head under the Dozer. Once again thanks to everyone for the help.
