What should I be looking for on an A-C H-3?

There is one coming up at auction in my area. I'm wondering what kind of things I should be looking for pro and con. Nothing really glaring jumps out at me, But I'm not very knowledgeable about crawlers/dozers.

You check everything like you would a wheel tractor, then you check the tracks, look at the drive sprockets and note their condition, look at the track chain bushings and see if they are round and not worn through, look at the link rails, they should be nice and beefy not worn thin, check the rollers both for leaks and wear, stick a pry bar in by the idler and see the axle is good in the center, the tracks commonly referred to as the undercarriage is an expensive item to replace,if you are not used to crawlers it will be well worth having someone to advise you that is.

Well said AJ. I would also advise that you check the steering clutches and the drive train on the underside. If the unit has been bouncing over rocks or stumps, there could be some damage on the underside of the drive train.

The motor/trans is normal D15 tractor stuff. Check that it doesn't pop out of gear (especially 3rd) when moving. Make sure the steering clutches disengage and the steering brakes engage.

But the most important thing is undercarriage. If you don't know your way around the undercarriage have somebody who does check it out. A worn undercarriage can make the machine a large useless headache and the parts (if you can find them) will quickly surpass the cost of the machine and its worth.
