JD 690B excavator fluids

I have this JD690 that I have been using for a year or so to do small projects around the farm. I have noticed by looking at the sight glass that the hydraulic fluid is getting low in the tank. My question is , would it be OK to use tractor/hydraulic fluid in the system? It seems to work in other machines but I am never sure of what John Deere's engineers decided to come up with.

Thanks for your help in advance.

I run a 690B and have owner and shop manuals for it. A Tractor hydraulic fluid that meets the J20C spec is what is called for. Most of the tractor hydraulic fluids that I see meet this spec. There is a metal mesh filter in the bottom of the tank which needs to be cleaned periodically. If I recall, the manual calls for a fluid and filter change required every 500 hours.

At my place we buy Shell oil in bulk, here is the scan from their book for the 690B,we use the standard oils.

Thanks everyone. I thought that the Hydra/Tranny stuff would work OK but your replies put me more at ease.
