455E not getting fuel

My terminology may be wrong. I call parts what they seem to be to me.

tractor usually starts well but sometimes stalls especially if going up hill with out full throttle and then will not start. I eventually leaned that if I loosened a
cap at the end of the fuel return line, fuel will come out, it will start, and then I will tighten the cap back down and problem is solved. But this time when I
tighten the cap back down it looses power and eventually stalls again even at full throttle. The tank is full and the tractor is now fairly level with the front end
only slightly higher.

The cap I am talking about is at the front end of a common rail that extends back to the last cylinder and then back to the tank. Midway it also T's off and goes down
to the top of the injector pump. There are also 4 lines from the injector pump up to each cylinder.

Could the line back to the tank be clogged and cause this? Why does it go to the tank and back to the injector pump? Should I blow it out with compressed air back to
the tank? Do I need to bleed some other line like the one that goes back to the injector pump?

Thanks

Dave

If the injection pump has a two screw cover on the side take it loose when it starts to die, if speed picks back up as fuel leaks out then the pump needs repair. Retainer ring is breaking apart inside, and when the small bits block the return side the pump will shut down when housing pressure equals the charge pressure. Just repaired a Case skid loader pump for the same issue..

Thanks. I will look into that this weekend. where would be a good place to take an injector pump for repair? Or would it be repaired while on the tractor?

If you are going to remove the injector pump it would be a good if you get it all lined up before removal. With the side cover removed line up the line on the Governor Weight Retainer and the line on the snap ring. That will put the engine at TDC of the inject cycle. Also, make sure that you have a mark on the attaching point housing and the cover. That makes sure it's timed correctly.

I lined up the lines in the pump and marked the pump and housing like instructed and then removed the pump. I took the pump to a local place that rebuilds them. They told me it is indeed not working properly as dieseltech said. Thanks so much for the great advice. I do feel guilty for not using Dieseltech for the rebuild, but it was simpler and faster to use someone local.

The front desk guy told me that the technician said I should clean the return line because it may be clogged up as well. Can I blow compressed air into the cap at the front end of the return line? seems like that will blow air and any trash out the return line to the pump as well as back to the tank, but will it be bad for the injectors? Also will that end up blowing out each of the lines going from the pump to each cylinder? I hope I don't have to take each line off at the injector because it is a hassle getting to them.

Thanks

Dave
