3514 hydro trans

I'm look at a 1970 3514 hoe with a
hydrostatic transmission. I keep hearing
nightmare stories about them but the price
is too good to not consider it. Is it even
remotely possible to get parts for the trans
these days. Any input would be appreciated.

Is it indeed a hydro or is it a torque converter drive?

They are basically a 504 tractor chassis. We had two at one time, one was a torque converter drive and the other was a gear drive with a reverser.

I understand that the hydro is expensive to rebuild, last price I heard was over $6k.

How much are they asking? If you are considering it try to find someone knowledgeable on them and do a hydro stall test.

The guy is asking 2k obo, buy it doesn't run either. So i was going to try for a thousand. At least I can get most of my money back at the scrap yard.

Yeah my other question was what ag tractor had the same rear. I keep hearing different models in the chats

Im trying to upload some pictures

What engine is in it? Diesel or gas? Ours had D188's in them. Yours might have a D239 if it's a diesel. 504 or 544 chassis, almost the same machine.

They weigh about 11,200 with the loader and backhoe on it, I would base the price on scrap value in its current state.

Check the backhoe pivot pin splines for wear, some people would put hardened cut nails in to take up the slack, if that part is garbage then it's not really worth messing with.

Dual peddles on the left side is what the torque converter machines had, not sure on the hydro machines. Our torque convert machine would have trouble driving up steep hills sometimes, dad said there was a pump in the trans that wasn't working right. But it would back up any hill you asked it to. There was a little valve just right of the seat that switched oil from power steering to the boom swing, most people didn't know about them and would think something was wrong with it.

Yes its a diesel i believe its a d239 being a later production year at 1970. The hydros have two peddles on the right side one forward and the other is reverse. I'm going to look at it tomorrow or Saturday. I'll know more about it then. The hydros should have a heel peddle to dump pressure for starting the machine or at least thats what i heard.

Yes in the picture it looks like there are two peddles on the left side. I would imagine clutch and brake. So it might be a torque converter model which would be good news.

I suspect it is a torque converter drive, they would have had a 4 speed trans shifted in the middle, so 4 forward and 4 backwards. All the hydro machines that I've see from IH have a high and low range gear selection.

The left most peddle would be reverse and the one next to it would be forward, both are tied to the throttle, more you push down the more throttle you get. The other pair of peddles on the right is right and left brake respectively.

I learned how to dig with ours, it would dig a deep hole for the size of the machine.

Nope thats forward and reverse on the left. So I'm still not sure which. I see some sort of lever in the operator station could be the high low neutral for the hydrostatic.
