Type A fluid in Pettibone log skidder???

Forum,
Fine tuning a 60's vintage Pettibone log skidder. Upon checking fluids one radiator cooled reservoir calls for type A fluid. The skidder has a four speed with a hydraulic clutch. Not sure why it would call for Type A fluid if it is a four speed transmission. Any and all thoughts are welcome.

If the four speed transmission is coupled to a torque converter and the both share the same fluid then type A fluid was what was used back then, when you refer to a hydraulic clutch what do you mean,to me a hydraulic clutch means that instead if having a rod or cable to operate the clutch you have a hydraulic cylinder under the pedal (known as the master cylinder)plumbed to another cylinder (known as the slave cylinder)to release the clutch. nowerdays the A type fluid has been retired and any good brand of generic HyTrans oil will do fine if not better in its place.

AJ,
Did not think the Pettibone had a torque converter?? When clutch is engaged the skidder moves. The chamber where the fluid is located it in the bell housing right behind the
block. Could this be a wet clutch?? The fluid is red in color if that helps. Friend of mine said to use Type F fluid. When your suggested Hytrans did you mean
hydraulic/transmission fluid? I am sure you mean to replace all fluid with new!
The clutch is a hydraulic version with lines traveling from a master to slave cylinder. Not sure of the whole system, can not find any info on line so I appreciate all info you provide.
Thanks for the help!

Type A fluid is automatic transmission fluid,so is type F,as I am not familiar with your skidder and you don't say what model it is I cannot find any specs for the machine, does it have a reverser,if so it more than likely has a torque converter and the clutch you mention is the cut out clutch, the Hytrans fluid means transmission and hydraulic, all modern machines would use it in the hydraulics and transmission,I don't think someone would put type A fluid in instead of oil unless that is what is called for as the type A would be a lot dearer, why not top it up with type A commonly known as ATF,cannot find any info and I have looked in all the common filter catalogs but it is not listed.

Mr. T. , go over to the " Forestry Forum". That's where you will find other owners of Pettibone log skidders.

AJ,
Reason I did not mention model is I can not find it located on the skidder. There is a plate on the dash but I can not figure out any numbers. As for Type A ATF, it is specified on
the filler cap. Called an auto parts shop and Type A ATF is not available any more. He said the replacement would be Type F.
Another question, took the air cleaner apart last night and found an area for an oil bath and what looked like steel wool packed into a box about 8x6x6 inches. What should I
replace the steel wool with along with 30wt oil? Any and all thoughts welcome!

Please be advised type F is a different fluid from type A. Any standard Dexron tranny fluid that does not say type F on it will work. Would not use synthetic fluid in it. It can be gotten at many different parts stores, Wallmart used to have it, Costco used to have it, Sams club used to have it in 5 gallon buckets.

The type F fluid is for Ford autos forget about it,you need the equivalent of the type A, at my place all the old Case backhoes that used the Borg Warner shuttle used the type A fluid, when the type A was discontinued the Case equivalent was the Case TCH fluid,it goes in the transmission hydraulics, steering and brakes, the equivlant of that by Shell is Rotella T1 10W or Mobil Trans HD10W.

50 years ago, if you had a GM or Chrysler auto with a slipping tranny, you could put a quart of Type F in it and the slipping would usually be reduced or ended. At least til you could send it down the road. LOL
