Just bought this dozer to use around the farm and have a few questions. First one is, this machine
is the torque converter version and is leaking fluid from what the seller said was a cracked
bellhousing is this supposed to be a wet housing like the converter drive case tractors or is this
supposed to be dry like automotive applications? Also what may have caused this housing to
crack? Not opposed to pulling the motor and working on it, can afford to put some time and
money into it as we got it cheap.
Thanks,
Dave

I believe it is dry

yes Dan is right they are dry there are a few things to check

1st make sure the flex plates ate not broken or bent these hold the converter to the flywheel if broke or bent can cause the seal to leak
2nd look at convertor neck some times they will get a grove where the seal sits
3rd the bushing in the trans can be worn causing a seal to leak
4th have the convertor pressure checked they are known to crack around the hub and or the neck
all these require the eng to be slid forward it will do so as a power unit after taking the hyd lines and such off

Got the engine out yesterday and had the local transmission shop check the converter, they said while it's not leaking the pump hub is damaged and to replace both the converter and bushing so going to do those and the seal. Also replacing the bell housing since it's cracked. Additionally found that the front motor mount bolt holes are egg shaped so planning on finding a block and overhauling the engine while I'm at it. Thanks for the advice.
