Bucyrus-Erie 15B Dragline

I have a 1943 Bucyrus-Erie 15B dragline. The problem I'm having is I can't get the boom to stop going up and down. Out of the blue one day the boom just started going up. Originally when I bought this machine I couldn't get the boom to go up at all, worked fine for a year, now this...any ideas?

Nothing falls up,the drum has to be winding the cable to pull the boom up,more than likely a clutch issue, see the linings have not come off the band and are sandwiched on top of the other linings,be careful the boom does not get pulled back over center.

Thanks for the idea, hadn't thought about the clutch lining doing that. I am very wary of the boom going over center! Been keeping the boom low so I have time to react and get her shut down as I work on it.

One question right off the bat. Does your machine have power load lowering on the boom? Some will, and some won't, depending on how it was ordered. Power load lowering -vs- gravity lowering work slightly different, so that could have an effect on what's happening.

That said, with the information given, I'll agree with AJ on this one. It sounds like the clutch on the boom hoist is either stuck/rusted to the drum, or a lining has come loose and gotten it hung up.

Check that, and let us know what you find. If you don't find a problem there, let me know on the PLL, and we can go from there.

As far as the lowering properties I'm not sure how to classify it. There is a system to assist and control the lowering of the boom, there is a ratcheting mechanism inside the drum/sprocket that links to a chain around the lift drum.

Shoot me an email and I can send you some
info from the manual on both varieties,
although it sounds like yours doesn't have
the independent PLL setup.

Your email isn't active and PM isn't working. I made sure my email is up if you will message me. Thanks

I just checked and none of your posts have the email open in them.

Look down at my last post, I purposefully opened my email in that one. I just clicked on the email option, to check it, and it came right up for me.

I don't like doing it in an open forum due to spammers, but if that doesn't work, post again and I'll give it to you here.
