Have some bad gouges in a stabilizer hyd.rod- anyone use jb weld or weld with stainless and have good results ?

JB weld does not last or I never could get it too. when I have to fix one now I just cut off the end and buy new chrome rod and have the threads cut and weld the end back on, done deal then does not take a lot of oil to pay for new rod

Years ago an older guy I knew that had a machine shop told me the best way to repair something like that. He had several HUGE cylinders that had gouges in the rods that needed to be repaired. What he showed me was to take the gouges and rough them up, and clean them up. I usually use a dilute muriatic acid to clean them, and a small grinder and rock to roughen them up.

With that done, find a solder with a low melting point. Do just as you would do with any other solder job and heat the rod until the solder will melt into the gouge and 'tin' it. From there, add solder until the gouge is a touch over full.

Once at that point let the solder cool and then file the solder down close. Then finish up rounding it out with emery cloth.

I did a couple of cylinders like this some years back, and haven't had any problems out of them yet. I wish I could remember which solder I used, but all I remember was it had as low of a melting point as I could find at the time.

Good luck.

Hey are you the guy who turned me on to the AK files forum?? If you are can you send me the info again so I can get back on it?? I lost ever thing in my old computer and cannot get on the AK files right now

Been in the repair business for nearly sixty years and have never seen any repairs like those mentioned work, when rods are damaged it is an costly to repair them, chrome has to be removed, damaged repaired by welding, machined and re-chromed,I would do what was said above go to the hydraulic shop and have them make up a new rod, anything you add to the old rod may come off inside the cylinder and ruin the pump or valve chest.
