Hi! This is the first time on this forum. I need a dozer at the right price so I'v been looking at ones that need repair. Need to discuss mechanical problem with converter. please any help would be appriciated

The farmer who is trying to sale, tried to replace a rear seal. After removing universal he was able to get seal out but shaft slipped in 1/2 inch, toward converter and will not come back out. I am trying to contact someone who is familiar with working on one of these dozers that can assist. Thank you. Jimi P,S. I am trying to buy but i have to have an idear what i am getting into.

your best bet is to go post on the ACMOC site---lots of experts there on Caterpillar

Jim that seal right behind the U joint more or less holds splash oil. The true converter is inboard from there. Most likely replacing the seal would just be a short term fix. Going to have to go in the converter. Could be bearing and seal around $ 1200.00 but if any of the hard parts like stator or rotor are worn then you could go on up over two grand. What is the rest of the unit like. Does it have good undercarriage or worn out , engine blow by, lots to look at on a 35 year old dozer. Nice really nice 10k d6c run anywhere from 12 thousand up to low 20s around here.
