bucket pins

replacing pin on backhoe bucket Case wants a fortune for new ones- I can buy round from on line metals but not sure what grade of steel should I use 1018,1045,4140, ??

The pins should be of equal hardness as the bushings. Too hard and they wear the bushings, too soft and they wear the pins.

For the pin material, 1018 would work just fine, and is a really common pin material. If you want to upgrade a but a piece of 4140 would be fine too.

As far as bushings, McMaster Carr will have just about anything you need. The ones I link to are a bronze material, which should be just fine, and is what a lot of mfgs used, for alot of years, and they will last for a long time with proper care.

I know a lot of equipment now runs hardened steel bushings, but even they will wear if you don't keep them greased.

Thanks ncwayne for the info-I got it all apart and the links are beyond repair- will have to look for some new thick steel to make new ones, I would prefer softer bushings as it is a lot cheaper than replacing 200 $ pins

Bought bushings from;Joseph Industries for my Case back hoe, excellant quality, very nice, phone #1-800-321-9983 in Ohio,
they use oem part no"s ,had a local shop cut pins from a suitable material.[bushings are half of oem]

Contact a heavy equipment boneyard and ask for hydraulic cylinder rods out of the cylinder. For some reason they have tons of them. Get the correct diameter and cut your pin out that.

Waaayyy cheaper than the OEM pins.
