Mid 60's case crawler

I have a mid 60's case crawler that I use around the Farm and for the second time in 2 years the fiber gear from the torque converter that slides into the flywheel housing has crumbled into pieces and sheared all twelve bolts off causing the crawler to not move. I was wondering if anyone would have any ideas as what would be causing this to happen. Thanks

You don't say what model,is it a 450, check the torque carrier bearings esp the pilot bearing in the flywheel,if the carrier bearings are worn the fiber ring has to support the torque and that can cause it to fail, look at the shafts and check the splines on both the shaft and the hubs they go into for excessive play that could be causing a slap,(jack hammer effect),stopping the tractor momentarily when going from forward to reverse is easier on the power train than jerking in and out of F/R from full speed.
