I have a used 1979 D3. Because I would be using it in warm weather, I used a group 27 truck to start it. It worked fine
It started using anti-freeze. I discovered a leak on the timing cover where it meets the block. That cover is about part #3 in the assy process of the engine. I decided to postpone repair till spring 2017 as I had a 1/2 completed project with it.
I constantly checked the engine oil for signs of leakage into that. None ever showed up.
I stopped the Cat on a Sunday and went to use it again the next weekend. It would turn about 1/2 a rev then stop. Turning the key off and on again, it would do the same.
After trying many things, extra batteries, etc, I went out and bought the correct full sized battery. The same thing happened except there was a metallic bang when it stopped after 1/2 a turn. I tried once more, same thing. Damage probably done...
I waited a day and loosened all the injector pump fittings just in case it was getting hydrostatic lock from diesel fuel. Now it would turn at the normal speed. A quick shot of ether produced nothing.
I then disconnected the intake connecting hose and laid just 2 fingers across it while trying to start it. Nothing. Nothing even with it completely covered. No exhaust pressure either.
Ideas? Whatever is wrong has to be affecting all cylinders. It is a 3204 DI engine
