New toy bought a Cat 955L sitting for 8 years

The motor was actually stuck, but after soaking some pb blaster in the intake and exhaust it's free..pulled exhaust to remove injection pump to install new plungers and barrels, she's coming back to life!

Yes it has the 3304T motor & powershift transmission, unless there was a known problem with the pump plungers I would guess that the last time it was shut down the throttle control was left in the shut down position and the rack in the pump is stuck in that position and no fuel will be injected, the side plate on the pump would need to be removed and the kicker that moves the rack freed, the 955L is a grand machine and a great loader and well worth repairing.

Yes actually the earlier version they called the D330 I believe, a big 4 cylinder with a turbo!..I finally got it to run, seems the #4 cylinder is dead, I just want to get it on my trailer and home!, the trans went in gear, I hope it steers to load it, it's getting cold hope it starts again when I try to pick it up

Check that the #4 injector valve is not stuck open, take off the line and turn the engine over, if the valve is open or the seat bad the compression will blow out, the nozzle is the throw away type and has to be replaced,do not run the engine any more that you have to with a bad injector as neat fuel will be getting into the cylinder and it will wash the oil away and cause a lock up, it should steer ok as the clutches and brakes are immersed in oil.

Yes yes yes great advice AJ thank
you!.,she ran well enough to get on the
trailer,somehow the oil got way
overfill and oil blowing out the top
breather tube bad!...but I got it home
and that was the goal, probably going
to need an inframe overhaul but we will
see

Thats an awesome find, love seeing the old crawlers brought back to life. Congrats on your Winter project, keep the pics coming. I just recently bought a little crawler loader winter project too. Massey Ferguson 200, looking forward to wrenching on it as soon as I kick this head cold. Best of luck to you...

If the oil is rising and as said not milky it is more than likely diesel thats getting in,the transfer pump would be my first suspect, usually it's the seal on the pump drive shaft but?
AJ

I believe it is milky, while draining
some oil out slowly, and adding
antifreeze, the green stuff was coming
right out the oil drain plug.
I got the belly pans off and washed
her down, it's actually cylinder #2 not
firing and blowing lots of oil out it's
exhaust port.
Tomorrow I'm going to pull the pan
first, then look where the coolant is
coming from, then pull the head and
check it out
AJ do you think ,as part of maintenance, I should do that transfer pump seal?

Thanks Rustrader, I actually used to have a MF 200 loader and a 6 way blade, I really liked that blade!..little Perkins 3cyl, I had no issues with those engines..
Well my latest progress is as follows. I pulled the pan Or sump unfortunately there's another section A flat plate that runs back above the loader frame and it seems I'm going to have to jack up the engine to get it off!, maybe I can service the number 2 cylinder with just the main sump off the screen was so severely clogged with sludge and rust particles I can't believe it had such good oil pressure here's a picture of the sump if you can see it and that's about as far as I've gotten
Also I removed the lens off the hour meter gauge and cleaned it sanded and buffed it down actually so I could see through it I'm curious does this hour meter have a tenth digit? Does this machine have 18,000 Plus or 1,800 hours?

When you had the engine running did you check if there were air bubbles in the coolant,if there was no air appearing in the rad it would indicate that the compression was not leaking out so the coolant would not leak in in the head area as the compression pressure is much higher than the coolant pressure,I have never seen the liner o'rings to fail even when a liner came loose,it is more likely that a liner became pitted with corrosion below the ring level and the coolant can leak through,on that engine the water pump is gear driven and should the seal fail coolant can get in that way,to get the plate you mentioned off the hard beam should be unbolted from the loader frame and raised up about 4 inches,if you raise the engine the alignment has to be reset between the engine and torque when you put it in place again, otherwise if it is out of alignment it will tear the flexible coupling apart or worse, the oil pump has to be timed to TDC #1 on the crank and the balance shafts locked in position.

Have you inspected the engine block for any cracks or previous repairs? You need to find out where the antifreeze is coming from. I spent a lot of time running a similar vintage 955, great machine. I know a farmer named Stinky Pete he has 5 of these machines Stinky is a true wealth of information and a dying breed. PM me for his contact info, I'm sure Stinky would be happy to help out with any questions. Happy wrenching on your new toy :p

Im almost certain that is 1800 hrs. The digit on the right looks to be a different color than the others also in the photo. What does the 2 gears and breather control?

Now you tell us that the engine had an issue,it would be fair to assume that the previous owner had that machine looked at by a Cat mechanic who would have diagnosed what was wrong and it would cost big bucks to put it right, did he tell you what the problem was, nobody would sell a 955L for scrap value unless there was a fortune to be put into it,what are the tracks like, the rest of the machine looks ok,hope the engine trouble is minor.

Well I pulled the head and found number 2 cylinder liner was cracked from the top down to just about the bottom so that's not too bad - I got a new liner new O-rings on the bottom and slipped it in.the piston looked beautiful rod bearings look beautiful crank look beautiful, some new rings in and that's as far as I've gotten

Was the liner loose in the block?,I downloaded the picture and enlarged it,I could see the crack and also noticed that the top was pitted and it looks like the compression was leaking out there, you need to carefully examine the counter bore that it square and even, the liner should be bolted down tight with a crossbar and the protrusion checked before putting the piston in,the liner has to be proud of the block by a certain value,if it low shims can be used to raise it,if shims are needed the counter bore usually need to be recut which needs a special tool.
Good luck
AJ

Thanks AJ...no it was not loose , but
was definitely not stuck using my
puller..I did follow my manual and
clamped it and measured, it was right
on where the other one was and the
other liners...thanks for the previous
tip on timing the oil pump with the
balancer shafts that was a pain in the
as! getting that back up there and
finding that Mark on the gear..I parked
them all with a paint pen. Should be
putting on the head tomorrow

Yes you put no1 cylinder on TDC,with the intermediate plate in position screw two 3/8 bolts through the plate to lock the balance shafts, then put on the oil pump.
