Starter or Battery

Hello and Happy Holidays to all my crawler and tractor friends! I recently bought a money pit better known as a Massey Ferguson mf200 crawler loader with perkins 3 cyl diesel. When its cranking over its turtle slow. Is it battery or a starter dragging. The replacement starter online seems smaller. Any help is appreciated. Started tested out fine at the autozone if that says anything. Thanks

I failed to mention that the battery seems good and in addition I put jumper cables on from a running truck, still cranked slow. Thanks

Have you checked the battery cables,if you can put the jumper cables directly on to the starter and see if it turns faster,(I would be using a volt meter) make sure the ground cable is good,if not there is only a few possibles, bad starter, too cold or wrong grade of engine or hydraulic oil, make sure that no hydraulic lever is engaged but you would have noticed that when it starts, still no good change the alternator to 24 volts and any bulbs it may have, leave the starter, fit another battery in series and that will solve your starting problem.

Take your starter to a true rebuild shop and have them test it. I have taken a few to another brand parts place, starters tested good there. Wound up taking them to rebuild shop - tests there showed margional, when they came back they worked as they should. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice AJ I will try checking the
voltage. I actually did use jumper cables and 2
batteries giving me the slow crank. Im going to have
starter checked out and possibly rebuilt this week.
Have a good day my friend.

Thanks for the advice , I will be checking into the rebuilding of the starter this week. Along with the voltage in the cables. I pulled the starter. ..Have a good day

(quoted from post at 17:50:38 12/04/16) If you didn't put the jumper cables directly to the starter you need to try that, it will bypass some potential problems.
Check your ground cable , if it bolts to frame or engine , take it loose and sand paper area for rust .

I had the same problem with my 450,someone else was having the same problem with his 450 and posted on here for advise,AJ advised him to change to 24 volt,I contacted AJ and he told me leave the starter and change to 24V,a used alternator from a yard fitted,an extra battery, one wire had to be changed to keep the heat and lights 12V it will start now first hit and that beats carring a battery or generator into the woods through the snow, the starter has lasted longer now than it did on 12V as I had it in the shop several times.
