Case 580 Super L series 2 Remove dipper piston for reseal. stretch it out, remove complete cyl, fold bucket under. anyone know the best way. thanks

The way I usually do dipper cylinders is to extend everything straight out to get the top of the boom as low to the ground as possible.

From there I usually set up a scaffold, or whatever I have handy, and simply remove the rod from the cylinder tube. This way usually makes taking the gland lose a lot easier as the cylinder is held rigidly and can't move, or turn as you break the gland loose. It also holds the tube in place as you remove the pieces to take the cylinder apart.

Once you get everything lose, if it's stubborn coming apart, I have used a come-a-long to pull the rod out of the bore. With it attached to the boom, you can sometimes use the boom to tie off to when you pull.

Good luck.

We reseal a lot of those cylinders both on site and in the shop, the easiest way to do them is to leave the cylinder on the machine, stretch the hoe out fully, dig the bucket into the ground, with the rod about halfway out,so you can remove the tilt pin from the bucket tilt, relive all the pressure, block up the cylinder and remove the pin connecting the rod to the tilt linkage, undo the lock on the gland nut, undo the gland nut,it will be held nice and solid, with the gland removed start the engine and with a second person to take to take the rod slowly push it out of the cylinder, now put the rod eye in the bucket tilt hangers and put a suitable pin in and block the rod up near the piston, with a suitable socket undo the piston retaining bolt and pull the piston off, pull the gland off, remove all the old seals and clean everything, keep it clean including your hands, fit the new seals making sure the orientation is correct, reseal the piston, clean the old "Loctite" from the threads, using plenty of oil on the seals fit the gland and piston, lightly smear the threads of the retaining bolt with "Loctite ,tighten the retaining bolt to spec, plenty oil on the piston, slacken the bottom oil line on the cylinder so the air can escape while you are putting the rod in,two men can handle the job without any lifting gear but if you have it use it.
