John Deere 500 TLB

My son has a 500 TLB with a diesel engine. It starts fine cold but
at opperating temp you have to let it set about 20 minutes after
turning it off before it will crank over. Has anyone encountered
this?

If you mean it won't start when hot, may be the injection pump needs repair. This is assuming the engine cranks over OK when hot by the starter, but there's no fuel delivery to the injectors when hot. After all cools down and then starts is a sign the pump needs work, maybe even a hydraulic head. Internal leakage is worse on a hot worn head, causing the no start trouble.

Sounds like weak starter, or possibly cables.

Need to check batteries(load test)
Cables (voltage loss)
Starter (Amp draw)

Are you sure it's not hydraulic pump issues? Very common on that machine. Is there a manual pump shut-off?

A common trick to see if it is hydraulic is to jerk the steering wheel back and forth a few times before trying to start it. This can release some hydraulic pressure, and allow the pump to turn over easier.

Thank you to all that responded! JDEM, it appears that you are right. My son tried releasing the hydraulic pressure by cycling the hydraulic levers and it started right up. Does anyone know what to do to fix it?
