Cat 933 starter

HI all, I'm new to the forum, and old equipment. I joined the forum searching for help about this 933 traxcavator I just bought. I am unsure of the year but the serial number is 11a1931. I bought it with a missing starter. I am unsure if it was converted from a pony motor or had a factory starter. What I can say is that it has a 24 volt gear driven generator, it has a heat/start switch that goes to solenoids. My fly wheel has straight teeth. I have been trying to do my research but I cannot get a definite answer on which starter I need, or where I can get it. So what I am asking is can anyone piece this together for a part number, and possibly somewhere that could sell me one? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you talked to a parts man at a Caterpillar dealer? They usually know everything there is to know about CAT parts.

A mt42 24volt starter should be what you are needing with a 11 tooth straight cut bendix u may have to rotate the cap to get the starter to sit on
right

Thank you. I did read something about those, and I wasn't sure if that was what I needed and if it was how many teeth I needed.

The MT 42 24 volt starter was common in older trucks...shouldn't be too hard to hard to locate from a place that sell used truck parts.

https://sites.google.com/site/oldmagcat/home/40mt-42mt-50mt-starters take a look here it explains the diff starters and their fitting although these are for converting from a pont to elec start the starters are the same except the bendix u need is straight cut

Since the tractor has a 24V generator, it means that it came with direct electric starting from the factory. You may have trouble getting a MT 42 starter to fit in there with the loader frame the way it is. They originally came with an inertia drive starter with a remote mount solenoid. At least this is the way that my 955 12A is built, and I think the 933 was the same way.

There is a lot more info on the Antique Caterpillar Machinery Owners Club. You can search the posts there for 933 questions.

For instance, there is a transmission gear that is no longer available in those models. Good luck with your new tractor, they were well built.

It's not that easy. The 933 11A uses the D311 engine same as the D2. They never used a straight cut flywheel ring gear. The direct electric start is unique to the D311. The 11 tooth RH helical drive gear is a smaller diameter than the D4/D6 drive gears and the available conversion drives. For an existing mounting arrangement you have a choice of either finding a complete D2/933 (D311) starter or you need to offset grind the starter nose mounting hole (approx 1/16") to handle the later conversion starters.

So I could buy a 42mt 24volt, 11t, rh drive straight bendix, then slot one hole, and it will work? If so which hole?

Drive needs to be RH helical. The ring gear is not straight cut.
It's the big hole for the drive end housing that needs to be slotted/offset ground slightly so the drive will engage the ring gear.
Standard SAE 3 drive end housing does not work. Need one that matches the D311 mounting.

That is where it should be for your s/n and my parts book confirms that a straight cut ring gear was not offered by Cat.
