Went to start my massey ferguson 470 wheel loader to load some more logs on the sawmill and when i turned the key the thing just clicked like the battery was low.

I jumped the 12v from my truck and tried again, still clicked.

Grabbed a multimeter and read 14.4 volts at the starter, turned the key and it clicked again.

The clicking is the solenoid firing but the starter won't move. Tapped on the starter with a hammer, still no go.

I have to remove the starter and take it in don't i? Ugh, i dread that because the nearest shop is a two and a half hour drive away. But on the plus side, there's a swiss chalet in town!! lol

It could be the solenoid. If it was mine I would try to put an old screwdriver between the hot post on the solenoid and the hot wire on the starter. If the starter whirls the solenoid is bad.

I had the same thing happen a few months ago on a car. Thought that the connections were good with a voltmeter, ended up being poor connections at the battery.Remove the connections and clean before taking the starter out to go to town , it is the sure way to check before going through all the work and time.It cost a tow for something I could have done easily on the spot.
Just saying... Roger

Could be the top post on the solenoid just needs turned 1/2 turn. That puts the unworn head area in line with the contact washer. Take all the wires off the top HOT bolt, loosen the nut until you can push the bolt IN about 1/4 inch. Now turn it 1/2 and pull it back out, the head inside has a square shoulder like a carriage bolt. Tighten the nut and replace all the wires. If the bolt has not ben turned before you now have a solenoid good as new. Fixed lots of Delco solenoids this way without even removing the starter.

I am ivor from uk and like the other guy said check battery connections and where earth lead goes to body of machine and solenoid connection and also feed to solenoid from starter switch

I did this, fired right up!! Took about 5 minutes and saved me a trip to town...right on man thanks for your help! I'll be sure to pass on what I learned should this come up again!

I did this, and the starter whirled so yeah the solenoid was bad. I took another piece of advice on here (removed the wires, cleaned post, push hot bolt IN a quarter inch, turned it 1/2 turn, felt it seat - has a square head like a carriage bolt inside - put it back together) and she fired right up!!

Thanks for all your help guys, appreciate it.

Problem fixed, now................ugh....i have to get back to work. lol right on, thanks guys for your help!! Much obliged

Thanks for the reminder about rotating the top bolt in the solenoid. I had done that a long time ago but had forgotten about that. The solenoid on my forklift has been acting up and it's in a very difficult place to get to. Went out and rotated the bolt and off she goes.

Thanks again for the reminder!
