310 case-not moving so well

Hi-new to the group and fairly new to dozers. I have a 310 Case 188 diesel that I acquired a while ago but haven't used very much - the reason being the following problem. It seems like it takes hardly anything to stop the dozer from moving.A rock the size of a large grapefruit will stop it in its tracks. My question is-is there something in the rear end that would stop it from moving or is it most likely a bad clutch or pressure plate ? I'm not familiar with the inner workings of the rear - I hear the word clutches spoken of all the time but do they affect movement or only steering ?
Thanks

No steering clutches in your machine. Just an engine clutch assuming you DO have one and not a torque-converter drive. My 310G is just gear-drive with a simple engine clutch. Transaxle is made by Clark and pretty much the same as used in Oliver Cletrac HGs, OC3s, etc.

If the machine stops and the trans is in gear - the driveshaft will stop if the engine clutch is slipping.

I agree, sounds like your foot clutch is slipping, does the pedal have any free-play? should be 1 1/2 or so inches free-play on the pedal, if it does not adjust it so you do and see if it holds then,,, I am betting it needs replaced, I highly recommend you have the flywheel brought back to specs and a reman clutch disc and pressure plate assembly, also pilot and throw out bearings as well

Hi, Thanks for your reply - OK -that's the part that I don't understand -drive shaft is turning and engine sound not changing but no machine movement ?

Hook something up to it and pull your dozer to make sure it rolls freely. that will remove any doubt as far as drives stopping it. Supposely you just have a direct drive to your transmission and not a torgue converter. If it rolls freely and the drive shaft turns with the motor then I would look at the transmission is not going in to gear. your dozer does not have steering clutches but just brake bands. if it rolls freely then the bands aren't a problem. There is a plate on the rear you can remove to inspect internals but you will have to drain the oil first as the break bands runs in oil.

Hi, The dozer will move on its own in all gears - the problem is that almost anything in it's way will stop it - it won't climb over or back over a 6 inch rock- again with no change in engine sound or rpm's

If the driveshaft is turning when the tracks stop - there is a gear coming out of mesh somewhere, or some splines that are near stripped. It is all gear-drive from the driveshaft to the sprockets. Note - my 310G almost does that at times but it's more of a "time lag." Sometimes I let the clutch out and for a second or two the machine does not move and then it catches. Like I've got loose splines somewhere. Acts like a very loose drive-chain although there are no chains inside. That being said - once moving it pushes dirt fine and thus the reason why I've never pulled it apart. My little Oliver HG has the same transaxle (made by Clark) and with that - the differential fell apart once. Just loosened up and all the bolts were falling out of it. Unlike a final drive - that diff is easy to check. Just pull the back cover off (or PTO if you have one).

When you do fix the problem make sure that you use the correct oil when refilling the transaxle. Using "normal" diff oil will ruin your brake linings which = no steer, no stop.

API GL1 90 weight mineral oil is what you need. I get mine at Tractor Supply, labeled as for "old ford tractors". Both my OC3 and OC46 steer and stop as intended.

Have you checked all your fluids? Sounds like your low on transmission fluid. When I got my first dozer it ran fine but i had the same problem you did. A feller on here told me to check the dipstick under the seat on my 450B...i wasnt aware there was a dipstick under the seat, looked, and there it was. checked it, sure enough was way low. Topped 'er off and good to go.

Good luck

Sounds like you need to drain the oil and then take that back cover off to inspect. possibly YOUR brakes are froze solid but probably not. Save the oil and if the brakes are okay then re use the oil. if not then replace it with mineral oil only. suspect you have a transmission problem.
