HD3 Allis starting fluid

Forum,
Recently researched other options to using starting fluid for the HD3 Allis. WD40 was recommended. Has anyone used this as an aid for starting a '65 Allis or other older diesel? Any and all thoughts welcome.

My opinion is WD 40 will start any diesel that has ran out of fuel to help get it going again.
It will not aid in "heating" the cylinders on a cold engine or one that is weak.

Use staring fluid sparingly and while cranking is your best option.

A guy that does work for me keeps a squirt bottle with gas in it instead of using starting fluid. Says its not near as hard on Diesel engines.

I haven't had any success starting a diesel with WD 40 if the weather is cold or the engine is low on compression. I've used ether for decades and it's fine sparingly as has been
mentioned. As another option you can warm up the intake manifold with an electric heat gun or if the machine is free from oil and grease under the hood you can use a propane
torch too but don't use heat and ether as it becomes too powerful and WILL do harm.

Maybe break the petrol down?

We have a local production (Oz) stationary engine whose cold start assistance is a felt pad in the intake that you soak in half and half diesel/petrol.

It rattles a bit on start but has been doing it since 1955
