Lots of black smoke but still no start

After all the good advise I've received on rebuilding my Case 850D I quit using ether to get it started.I've bled and bled and bled all the air from the system,re-checked valve adjustment, new batteries, checked on/off solinoid. When I hit the starter I get lots of black smoke but still no start.I did not remove injector pump so engine should still be in time. What am I missing here?

Did you have the valves and seats ground? If so, did they get the valve protrusion right? Had a Case tractor that they did a valve grind on. I didn't check it before I put it together. It wouldn't start unless you pulled it and got it spinning over fairly fast. Ended up they ground the valves and seats so much that the protrusion was way off. Ended up with new valves and seats. Started perfect after that.

If you are getting black smoke it is getting fuel and starting to burn a little. The compression is likely low from sitting a while. So I would give it a little ether once you start to see smoke.

Is this the Cummins 6T590 engine,go back to the beginning, why did you strip the engine, what did you do to it,what new parts did you fit,did you disturb the timing train, did you have governor cover off the injector pump, was the engine running before the tear down, two things can cause excessive black smoke, over fulling and lack of air.

Are you sure the pump isn't 180 degrees out of time(mixed up TDC compression and exhaust). I did that on one once. It kinda ran, but no power and just belched black smoke constantly.

bad injectors, bad timing like what aj said, turbo lag or turbo not working, valves need adjusting, over fueling....or could be a restrictino in the airflow somewhere.....had a mouse nest in an intake on my truck once.....smoked like a SOB until we cleaned out the pipes and put a new air filter in lol good luck man
