Just got done rebuilding my Case 850D.New head, new pistons, new rings, new injectors.new bearings.Bled off air at injectors and went to start it.Will not start.Hit it with ether and it almost fired.Bled off injectors again hit it again with ether still no start.Checked and re-adjusted valves almost starts on ether but still no start.Any suggestions?

Avoid using too much of that ether. Those new rings will score the cylinder walls with ether starts.

Did you do a compression test after the rebuild? It almost sounds like there may not be enough compression. Hoping this isnt the case. Should be around 140 psi

HOLD OFF on the starting fluid.. Here is what do. Mix a bottle of 50/50 gas and diesel . Find a spray bottle like a windex bottle remove the hose to the intake and spray a little in as you crank it over. It may come up and go to hitting. There is always the chance you have it 180degrees out of time if the injector pump was removed.

When I'm into a diesel engine I like to leave the injectors out until I have cranked the engine to develop oil pressure, and pushed all the air out of the injector lines.

I never even thought of using ether on a new engine!

The one that really stumped me once was my old IH truck with DT466 engine with rotary pump. I cranked and cranked on that, but no fire. I even changed the pump, thinking maybe I had timed it on exhaust, rather than compression. That didn't work, so I changed it back. Lots and lots of cranking. Finally, without warning, a puff of black smoke came out, and it was running, without a skip. Never did figure that out.

I assume you have a similar fuel/air issue.

Do NOT use ether on it again....

One suggestion was for a mist of gas/oil, others may have other methods.

I would guess that it is either cranking over really slow, cam timing is off or you do not have valves set correctly.

Did you pull the camshaft or gears?

Like the others said keep away from the starting fluid, otherwise it was a waste of time and money rebuilding the engine, just for the record a diesel engine will not run on neat ether but will fire on it so it would seem you got a fuel issue, first thing to make sure of is the electric on/off solenoid working,if so and you got a CAV injector pump it could be air in the system as those are a right sob to bleed, bleed the filter/s first and then the injector pump, finish with the top bleed nipple, keep on priming till the lever goes limp, loosen each line a couple of turns at the injector, that's the line that goes on to the top not the side,on full throttle crank the engine over till fuel spurts from the pipe unions, tighten them up and try for a start.

i would try using carb cleaner and spray lubricant together. not as explosive as ether and the spray lubricant will keep the cylinder lubricated.
