Case 310E Diesel Dozer

Good Morning,
I am looking for someone with personal knowledge of the Case 310E dozer with the 188 diesel engine. I picked one up for a fair price. The engine needed rebuilt and it needs a couple rollers. I have rebuilt the engine and I am putting it back together. I have ran into a few problems. The first problem is the glow plugs. The front #1 cylinder glow plug is broke and I need to replace it. The glow plug in it is an autolite BH12-1. That crosses to the Champion CH3, but the length of the glow plow is too long for the #1 cylinder since it does not have enough clearance to clear the blade lift cylinder. Does anyone know of a replacement for the BH12-1 spark plug that is shorter than the CH3? My next question is this. On the later model 310G parts diagram it shows a glow plug in the hole that is directly in the center of the intake right below where the stand pipe goes up to connect to the oil bath canister. Does this single glow plug in that location do away with having glow plugs at all 4 cylinder locations on the newer ones? I would post pictures of what I am dealing with, but not sure how to on this site. Also needing an oil bath air cleaner canister and radiator if anyone has any leads.

The single glow plug on the G is a newer version than the 4 fitted to the E,you would need the manifold to suit, the Case part # for the one you want is G45259,do a Google search for that part # and you will bring up several.

For your glowplug problem, why not remove a BH 12 glowplug from another cylinder and put it in #1 cyl., and put the longer CH 3 glowplug in a cylinder where you do have clearance???

Oil Bath Air Cleaner & Radiator should be available through your local Case Dealer.

Unless I am missing something here, why do you need these "glow-plugs" at all? Only indirect-injected diesels really require them to start at all temps. Case 188 is a direct-injected diesel and does not have anything I'd call "glow plugs." Both my Case 188s use a single intake-air heater. Maybe later ones like your's have four air-heaters? I'd likely just not use them. Why bother? Are you having trouble starting? Both my 188s start fine down to temps around 45 degrees F. If colder then that, I plug in the block heater. I have never found those intake manifold air-heaters to help very much anyway.

I have to admit, I have not ever looked close at a newer 188 so am a bit clueless as to what Case did. It is a direct-injected diesel so there are no pre-combustion chambers to install glow-plugs. So I assume you just have intake manifold air-heaters. If I am wrong, please correct me. My 310G has just one air-heater that I never use.

I am calling them glow plugs as that is what they are listed as on all the sights. Mine is an early 60s model. It has 4 of them in the intake. The G45259 supercedes to a 86550509. If you look at up online it is the long Champion CH3 style. There are 3 of those style and one of the Autolite BH12-1. The case site shows them all as the same part number. As I stated in my original post, unless you have personally had one with the 4 plug setup as mine does on a case 310 dozer then you cannot understand it. The new glow plug that it calls for is too long. As for Radiator, i am not paying the stealer $1500 for a Radiator. I will find a used one somewhere or find one that is close and adapt it.

Please explain . .
"unless you have personally had one with the 4 plug setup as mine does on a case 310 dozer then you cannot understand it. "

There are many things in this world I have managed to understand without actually owning. In the case of your Case - I am still trying to understand why you need the heaters at all? Like I said, I have two Case 188s and even though they both have intake-air heaters - I never use them. Is your engine a poor starter, or do you need it in cold weather a lot and have no access to a electricity for a block heater?

Also, what part of the heater is too long? The part that goes inside the intake manifold or the part that is outside? If the outside is the problem, maybe a different brand might help. Those same exposed-coil air-heaters were used in Allis Chalmers and Ford tractors too. My 172 Ford has the same heater as both my Case engines. Old Champion # AG3 with 18 mm threads, 7/8" hex, and rated at 384 watts. Wellman makes an equivalent with # 6A843G013
